Sorry about the subject heading...I just couldn't resist.
ME:
Anyway, some of you may know me, but I've been mostly 'lurking' on the
list this last year, so here's a quick intro for the rest of you:
My name's Luis and I'm originally from London, ON, but living in Toronto
now. I got into the party scene in London in the mid-90's, and have since
followed the techno/tech-house scene into mostly club events as well as
idm/experimental events in and around T.O. I spent a few years attending
university in Indiana and got into the Indy/Chicago scene there (and
developed a dark love for booty house!). At the moment, I'm in my 2nd
year of an M.A. in Musicology (or 'Music Studies'...whatever's in fashion
at the moment).
ABOUT the SOFT PINK TRUTH:
So, I've decided--since I'm a glutton for punishment--to do an
independent research project that uses The Soft Pink Truth as a case study
(TSPT is one-half of Matmos..Drew Daniels in particular).
What I'm working on is a response to current popular music
research around Electronic Dance Music. Most of it comes from an academic
tradition rooted in anthropology and cultural studies, so the writers tend
to focus on the social and cultural aspects of the music without actually
discussing the SOUND of the music. I think that it's hard to say much
about a musical culture like the EDM scene without listening closely to
the music they listen to.
However, part of the reason that researchers have been so
reluctant to talk about the sound of the scene is that most of the tools
musicologists have for analysis and close listening were designed for
18-20th-century classical music. It's kinda like analyzing haiku poetry
by looking for a rhyming pattern.
So my hope is to try and build my own toolbox that considers both
the sound and the society of the scene(s) and provides a bit more balance.
But since building this abstract toolbox to cover everything in the EDM
spectrum would require an eternity of work, I've decided to take a case
study (The Soft Pink Truth) as a starting point. I've actually chosen the
track that I want to work on as well: Track#1, 'Everybody's Soft'
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
I'm looking for a lot of input from scenesters and non-scenesters
alike, and for any level of involvement. You could (in order of
increasing commitment):
1. Send me a quick review of The Soft Pink Truth, 'Do You Party?' Track 1:
"Everybody's Soft"
2. Answer a few email questions that I send out
3. Take part in an email 'forum' with other people to discuss some of the
questions and issues that I'd be raising (as well as your own).
4. Allow me to call you once or twice to conduct a phone interview
5. If you live in or near Toronto, meet with me for an in-person
interview.
6. Write my paper for me (just kidding).
I realize everybody's really busy and most of you won't be able to
help me out with all of this...but most of you can at least send a quick
and dirty review of the track, right? =]
So thanks to everyone for reading through this whole email. Don't
forget to reply to me in private, since this email is going out to 3
different lists!
thanks muchly,
Luis
