Dabrye
(Ghostly International : Eastern Developments)
Live Experimental Hip Hop PA
Dabrye is just one alias of Ghostly International recording artist
Tadd Mullinix, who shifts through various guises with a refreshing
competency and sophistication. His Dabrye LPs, "One/Three"
and "Instrmntl," the latter for Scott Herren aka Prefuse 73's Eastern
Developments label, brought him critical acclaim in the hip-hop
underground from notable figures such as Jay Dee and Jurassic Five.
His techno-ready James Cotton moniker won him fans like Techno and
House luminaries Matthew Herbert and Laurent Garnier. The classical
structure and melodies of his debut full-length under his birth-
name "Winking Makes a Face" and the 2002 follow-up "Panes" turned the
chin-stroking IDM connoisseurs on their heads. With a new Dabrye LP
for Ghostly International due out in late 2003, Tadd Mullinix looks
ready to bring Dabrye into the elite of forward-thinking and
groundbreaking new artists.
Twine / Phase4
(Ghostly International : Bip Hop : Hefty Recs : Headroom Digital)
Live PA / Live Visual Manipulations
Greg Malcolm and Ric Hudgins, who perform as Twine and Phase4
respectively, bring an approach and aesthetic to their performances
that is typically only observed in the worlds finest art galleries
and museums. Their live performance experience was described in Urban
Mag, a Dutch electronic music and culture magazine, "With its
intricate colors, abstract shapes and organic texture, the video
seems like a visual equivalent of Twine's music.the work of Phase4 is
based on similar ideas that are being used in so much music: de(con)
struction, abstraction, decontextualisation..." This is to say that
the audio and video each undergo a kind of digital destruction, and
re-constitution within a carefully constructed human feedback loop.
Twine and Phase4 have had the opportunity to take these ever evolving
ideas into the larger arts and media, and academic worlds through
various projects. Their work is featured in the SONIC PROCESS exhibit
in Barcelona Spain, curated by the Pompidou (Contemporary Arts
Center, Paris France) which looks at modern life and contemporary
arts through the filter of electronic music/culture. Their
collaborative work is also featured on PIRATETV.NET, an on-line
showcase for talented VJ's, DJ's and electronic musicians created and
hosted by the UK's world renown electronic music and media duo,
COLDCUT (Ninja Tune).
Soup aka Servo
(Beta Bodega Coalition : Etihad : FonoForum/PhonoPhorum)
Live Experimental Downtempo PA
Formed in 1998, Servo/Soup is the vehicle for Stewart Brown and
Garred Martin's musical journey. Experimental and accessible at once,
Servo's music combines chunky beats with warm playful melodies. The
duo is currently signed on several labels including Miami-based Beta
Bodega Coalition, Etihad Records, and Phonophorum, along with label-
mates such as Takeshi Muto (Romulo from Phoenecia), Jake Mandell,
Push Button Objects, and Prefuse 73. Servo has performed live in
cities such as Detroit, Miami and New York with some of the biggest
acts on the experimental/electro circuit including; Richard Devine,
Oval, Ectomorph and Phoenecia. These experiences have sharpened their
skills, and allowed for a mature and unique sound to develop. Servo's
music evolves with each release, and they are currently in the studio
finishing up their upcoming full length release on Beta Bodega
Coalition under the alias Soup.
