Hey there... I'm very much a techno newbie, and was wondering if you guys could give me some recommendations. I've just got a copy of Incest Live by Sutekh which I think is brilliant and I also love Richie Hawtin's Decks EFX & 909. Any suggestions in that sort of vein would be greatly appreciated. Furthermore, any idm type stuff with strong danceable beats would be excellent too... I'm thinking along the lines of the Akufen album here. Thanks all :) Richard --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The Tresor True Spirit compilation is a pretty dame fine place to start if you're getting into techno. On a Hawtin vibe check out the Plus 8 classics compliation, and the FUSE album on Warp. Oh, and all the Plastikman albums are all excellent, though less straight ahead dancefloor than his other stuff.

True spirit is a good example, but it is in the harder side of the spectrum; at least compared with Sutekh, and Hawtin stuff, and Akufen. To go on the Akufen way, I'd suggest listening to Swayzak GrooveTechnology v1.something. I would check out Perlon and Force Inc labels along with the www.mutek.ca website... they have a lot of archived minimal techno streams that might help you decide on what you like. I really like Dean De Costa too on Plug Research.

i second that. definitely worth checking out for quality lush techno. other things you might also might want to check these out for akufen, sutekh type stuff: andrew weatherall's "hypercity forcetracks" perlon's superlongevity 1 & 2 compilations ricardo villalobos "love family trax" mix for more straight up dancefloor techno there's a wealth of stuff. i'd recommend starting with big-time techno folk like jeff mills, advent, rob hood, derrick may, surgeon, and more recently ben sims, adam beyer, marco carola. from there, you can work your way towards other artists and narrow down what you like. albert

Featuring both down-and uptempo tracks, the record's strengths are its ever-morphing melodies, keyboard lines, drum machine patterns, and understated vocals. I was wondering if anyone has heard this Kowlaski/Hostettler/Desantis - Reasons CD on Kanzleramt. I really like a lot of Diego Hostettler's (aka Shapes & Forms) material, so I figured it should be pretty good. The Alexander Kowalski track on Compost's Future Sound Of Jazz Vol. 9 is pretty nice. ===== "... we live in fictitious times. There are sooo many derivatives of Techno going (Detriot Techno, Minimal Techno, Hard Techno, Deep Techno, Tech House, German Techno, Glitch Techno). If you like Hawtin's Dex, EFX and 909 I would say your after Hard Techno, Deep Techno and even a little Tech House. As far as Detroit and Hard Techno goes you can't beat the Tresor label Some Tresor artist include: Christian Vogel, Surgeon, Jeff Mills, The Advent, Savvas Ysatis, Juan Atkins, James Ruskin, Daniel Bell, Joey Beltram. I would also recommend Joel Mull (Lask Records), Cari Liekabush (Hybrid records) Umek, and Oliver Ho if your into the harder German type stuff. For new off-shoots of Tech/House (Glitch, Micro House, Dub Tech, Tech House, Deep House) check out the labels Perlon, Context, Force Inc, Play House, Klang, Mosaic, Kompakt, Minus, Source, Traum, Persona, Chain Reaction, to name a few. If you really like Kompakt check out their sister label Traum. They're very simular. Artists to check out would be Sutekh, Stewart Walker, The Modernist, Thomas Brinkmann, Pantytec, Llumo, Akufen and Soft Pink Truth. Also, if you haven't heard Hawtin's "DE9: Closer to the Edit" mix CD it is full of this type of music and mixed beautifully. Cheers and long live Techno!!!! ^(|_|)^
