Since Matthew Herbert will soon be performing here in Cape Town as part of the North Sea Jazz Festival, I'd like to know whether anyone who's seen/heard him perform with his 'big band' can give me a rundown of what to expect. Does he go in quite a jazzy direction? Or Housey? Apparently he will be doing his live sampling thing - just wondering how this will fit into the jazz spectrum of the event? Thanks for any comments! I haven't seen him do his new stuff, but I know someone who has had a copy of the upcoming release for a while and from what I understand, it IS a big band record with *very* little tweaking involved. jeff At 07:31 AM 3/19/2003, Irene McC wrote:

I've only heard him dj and know his records. It really doesn't matter what he does, it'll be well done. It should fit into the Fest and wherever else you need a fit. Worth whatever the ticket, methinks. Go! I have seen in 3 times with the band and twice as a DJ and I must say the band/live format blew me away. Herbert is one of the most innovative performers I have ever seen because he actually is sampling himself (and bandmates) live using a system of microphones and realtime sampling hardware (Lexicon Jam Man I believe). I saw him perform in Berlin once (to a very picky dance crowd) and he had the place rolling. He sampled boiling water, coke cans being torn, records breaking, water bottles (that the crowd had thrown up on stage at his request), glass breaking and his own voice all of which he looped seemlessly a top some of the sickest tech house tracks I have ever heard. I HIGHLY recommend checking out Herbert perform live. That man in a genius! ^(|_|)^

That's when he performs as Radio Boy. I seen him do roughly the smae thing at Sonar last year, using coke cans, big macs, TVs, gap bags and other assorted things, as sort of an anti-capatilism protest. It was really good, even if I did almost fall asleep during it. You can get a copy of the music he uses for free, details on his website.
