Sounds interesting. You should check out Oskar Sala .. There was a compilation of his works released on Fax called "My Fascinating Instrument" which the oldest track on is 1952... Though the sleeve notes talk of him experimenting with electronic music in 1930 ... Sala is probably most famous for the sound effects on Hitchcock's "The Birds". The Oskar Sala is one of the few Fax releases that I still listen to a lot. He and Raymond Scott are real heros -- they combined engineering skills with a composer's soul to make music that was unique, yet accessible emotionally. They also both experimented with styles that remind me a whole lot of Autechre and Richard Devine in places. Fax releases being what they are, the Oskar Sala is probably pretty thin on the ground but if you see it, snap it up. And the 3 volumes of Scott's "Soothing Sounds for Baby" are a must, and still in print. On Wed, 12 Feb 2003, Muffin wrote:

To my knowledge "Peome Electronique" was the first performance to incorperate tape loops, sirens and video clips to help carry the music. It's actually really good for the time, but I wouldn't consider it dance music by any means. I would say the first intelligent "dance" piece is "Picture Music" buy Klaus Schultz. It was release in 1974 on Braindance Metronome. The song Picture music is one side of an LP (20 plus minutes) and is incredible. Schultz was a master of the modular synth and actually developed/built his our analog sequencers, which was how he was to created such intricate rhythms. I can't think of an earlier piece of music that could still stand up against todays IDM. ^(|_|)^

Man, kraftwerk rule - saw them recently here in Adelaide, Australia at Big Day Out - they were the closing act here, so pretty much everybody with any music taste you could think of saw them. Most people initially thought they were strange (four guys on laptops, just standing there the whole time) but they put on a really, really good show. By the end pretty much everybody was completely into it. Really rare to see with that kind of electronica. "Radioactivity" is still in print. The original poster didn't feel it necessary to go into any detail about what they mean by "IDM" when searching for its roots in history, but you'll have to go further back than the 70s. As much as Klaus Schulze fans like to give him credit for everything that came after him, I'm going to have to refer to actual history and point you guys to Bruce Haack, who made wacky ersatz-childrens music with a home made synth system. Some of it sounds like K'werk, some more like Rephlex stuff. As in the Bauhaus song? If so, I don't make that connection at all. There is a little echo on the drums here and there, but nothing that registers as IDM. Yeah, it's a shame that Bauhaus is thought of as many people as being just a Goth band, 'cause right from the beginning ("Bela" was their first single), they always played around with a variety of sounds, styles and production techniques. The full-length version of "She's In Parties" goes into a wicked dub section once the regular song finishes, for example. They really were a great band. Tones On Tail wasn't an earlier version of Bauhaus, it was a side-project. Here's a good description from a TOT fan site that I found at http://charon.gothic.net/~skot/tot/ : "Tones On Tail were originally Daniel Ash (Bauhaus) and Glenn Campling (roadie for Bauhaus). The group was formed in 1982 as a side project for Daniel while he was still in Bauhaus. They were later joined by Kevin Haskins (Bauhaus) after that band's breakup. Though the career of Tones On Tail lasted only a couple of years (1982-1984), the group definitely made a lasting mark with their hard-to-define deep dark blue sound. After Tones On Tail ended, David J. (Bauhaus) rejoined with Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins to form Love and Rockets. Traces of Tones On Tail can be found on the last Bauhaus record, "Burning From The Inside" (particularly on the track "Slice of Life"), as well as the first Love and Rockets LP, "Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven" (particularly on the title track)." There's a double CD called "Everything!" that, as the title suggests, collects all of Tones On Tail's studio work, along with a bootleg-quality live recording of "Heartbreak Hotel" and a short radio interview. I highly recommend it.
