Sorry, I can't help you out about the video games, but I do have something to say about Drukqs. First, I was an old skool aphex punter, "digeridoo" was the first techno song I really loved, that actually made electronic music the predominant force in my life circa 1992. I quickly started to fall into the aphex craze, calling record stores all over the country to track down the remix of Curve, the universal indicator records, etc. etc. Long story short, when the hangable auto bulb eps and the richard d. james album came out, I felt seriously let down and reluctantly dismissed RDJ as having lost his marbles, musically if not mentally. That was very difficult, to let go of someone's music which had been a formative influence in so many ways, especially aesthetically. When Drukqs came out, I just figured it would be another slapdash exercise in beat fuckery with "quirky" melodies that would make the audience say things like "whooo, that's another crazy fucked beat! Man, this guy is on some _other_ shit!" while others sat scratching their heads, not really knowing what to say. Basically, I'm writing this to ask you folks if you agree with me that this lp is a return to form for RDJ. I anticipate the following replies: a. it's not a return to form at all--he's never lost it, he's a genius who drives a tank, what do you expect??? b. it's definitely not a return to form. Have you listened to "on" recently? New aphex doesn't hold a candle to "classic" aphex. b. yes, it's a return to form--but it's no SAW 2 or "i care because you do," so he's still a wanker. c. yes, it's a return to form and I was just as impressed as you were (he must've taken some notes from ms. john soda). Just kidding about the soda. I'll be honest, I've only listened to Drukqs once through as I just last week found the courage to take the plunge and get it. I waited that long. Anyway, it seems like a strange blend of SAW 2 and the better parts of the newer output. No heavy metal, or ironic G-rap references. Strange, where'd all that go? I'm sorry if this is beating a dead horse, I don't know how much you've discussed this album already, probably loads from my memory of what this list is like (I was a regular IDMer for a few years around 1995--1998, and just resubbed 2 days ago). But if you can be arsed, let me know how you feel (especially if you've been into aphex since 1992, which I'm sure is the case for a lot of you geeks). oh yeah, "braindance" is just as moronic as "IDM," which I'm assured whoever sent that Rephlex memo knows. Wow. British irony. How amusing. Those Rephlex cats should spend more time with their tones and less with the comedy (that "80% of their output is crap" comment is true, but a bit too kind). What form? As far as I can tell there has never been a "classic" Aphex era, but everyone has thier favorite album. I had the kind of opposite reaction at first to "Drukqs" in that at first listen it kind of seemed like some quirky half assed practical joke, and only recentley do I enjoy it. Of course my favorites are windowlicker and the RDJ album. Hey has anyone mentioned the fact that Aphex's name could also be "Dick D.J.?" __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. I don't mean to say "classic" as in "it's an obvious fact that this is an objective period of time which includes the pinnacle of RDJ's known output." I was following the cue of the "classics" compilation, indicating that era--pre 1995 I guess. In no way did I mean to suggest that everyone's favorite album fell into this era.

After reading the first sentence there, I thought you were joking, but the follow-up sentence puts it in perspective. I can understand how someone who rates the new stuff would be put off by Drukqs; in a way, you've confirmed what I was saying about it. Cheers then, Ben __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. you're insane! the rdj album is by far and away his best! saw2 next, followed by come2daddy then saw then drukqs then windowlicker. icbyd seems to have aged badly, loved it when it came out but it seems boring to me now... haven't listened to his older stuff in years so i cant comment about that.... i didn't find the melodies on rdj 'quirky', i found them beautiful.... so from your 4 letters i'd have to choose 'd' (seeing as you had 'b' twice)

lol! 'british irony'... there's only one kind, you yanks don't seem to be able to get your heads around that one... but it's not anyway coz it's not moronic... it represents the brain dancing.. which could be seen as a metaphor for many things (feet dancing, emotions dancing, intellect dancing)... or something on the 80% thing... bollox. ovuca, astrobotnia, transllusion, bastien, normandeu, bogdan, d'arcangelo, cylob, globalgoon... all brilliant the only things i wasn't into recently were pproy & k-rock and they're finally releasing the soundtrack to that stakker video.. yay! skism --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It's due on Jan 27th. Promos were sent out back in late November/early December, so they should be on target for that release date. I suppose you are referring to the imminent release of Stakker's "Eurotechno" soundtrack on RePHLeX? It's the soundtrack to still one of the best techno videos I've ever seen. Done in the late 1980s-early 1990s, with everything the video mixer/video effects processor du jour at that time, the Fairlight CVI could give out and an original soundtrack by Brian Dougans. There's a better story backgrounder at http://www.rephlex.com/2001releases/cat129/cat129cd.html . I have to urge everyone to pick up this release when it's out, the soundtrack is just superb, although when separated from the visuals of the video (which is quite trance-inducing and, I gather, a source of seizures to those with epileptic tendencies), not as powerful. All this is leading up to just one thing - back in the days when I was starting to collect records and playing at parties (well over a decade ago), I got my hands on an original copy of the Stakker: Eurotechno video. The first time I saw the video I instantly knew that this was something I should never let go of. During the years, I've amazed friends every now and then with the video and it's soundtrack, and it is still as fresh and enticing as when I first saw it. I really don't know what it's worth, and I don't want to know - it'll have to pried from my cold, dead, handcuffed-behind-my-back hands. And before any of you get yourself in a knot over this - NO. I'm not making copies. Not one. Don't ask, whine or plead, it'll go straight to the bin. But do get the soundtrack when it's out. -- nuutti-iivari meriläinen gordon at diversion dot org http colon slash slash www dot diversion dot org slash --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
