From the page: Mum - Finally we are no one (Fat Cat, 2002) Mum have shown their wide-ranging prowess on previous releases in a mostly techno vein, albeit dynamic and melody-bound. Here, they effortlessly ease into another direction, that of sweet, emotional and dreamy electronic pop... [etc.] Mum - The Szabotnik 15 Mission (Klein, 2002) A prolific year for Mum. And again, a different direction here; left field and funky. Brilliantly executed grooves... [etc.] There are two groups called "Mum", right? One with the little accent over the "u", the other without the accent? These two reviews are not the same Mum, right? On another note, I was selling a ton of my music at Other Music the other day, and decided to use some of the cash they paid me to pick up the new Sigur Ros album. What a complete waste! I can't imagine anything more boring than "()" (or was it "(("? Or maybe "[|") Seriously, their previous album has it's beautiful moments, but this one is just, like, "tinkle tinkle tinkle, drone drone drone, moan moan moan tinkle," etc. etc. AAAAUUUGH!!! I don't know about everybody else, but they just took everything I liked about the first album and got rid of it, leaving only the boring bits, which only served to make me realize that I haven't listened to their first ablum in over a year because it's frankly not *that* amazing, so I'm selling them both. Sorry, I just had to vent there. 2002 saw a few good things here and there, but overall it was full of disappointments and "blah" moments. Both musically and politically... Looking back at everyone's "best of 2002, the horror" responses, I saw more mentions of things I had forgotten in my own list, quite good stuff, like Proswell & Machine Drum & ML & Susumu Yokota, but really 2002 just disappointed overall. I guess it just makes me appreciate the good stuff all the more... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think the reviewer thinks they are one and the same but they are definitely not. M?m (pronounced moom) is from Iceland and from what I can tell MUM is a duo from Vienna...

sorry you were so disappointed, but I couldn't disagree more. Sigur R?s is on my top 5 for the year. I think it's actually better than the previous release, because it flows more as a complete album rather than a collection of songs. I could see if your expectations were for more of the same, or for concise pop songs, that it would be a disappointment but I think it more than delivers as far as an accomplished album is concerned... certainly darker in places as well. Ah, well, that's personal taste for you :-)

I honestly think 2002 was quite exciting for music. I think, however, a lot of what excited me had little or nothing to do with traditional IDM fare. I feel like techno continues to mutate and evolve in new and interesting ways, that there are a variety of new rock-format bands that are recombining old tricks with new approaches.... I posted a list last week, so I won't go into that again, but I feel like more than ever there is a lot happening out there... m.mercer :: design + sound sound: http://www.mattmercer.com design: http://www.matthewmercer.com _________________________________________________________________ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I certainly wasn't looking for pop songs - I'm not a pop song person (well, usually). I just feel the new album certainly flows a whole lot more, in the sense of a fog that's just the same all the way through with no variation, and you just can't wait to get through it. I'd agree it's personal taste! :) As far as I'm concerned, it *is* more of the same, except that the stuff that's the same is not what I had expected or hoped would be the same. I guess you could say I had hoped they would go one way, but instead they went another.

Definitely agree; the stuff that I did like had little or anything to do with traditional "IDM" fare. On the other hand, a lot of the new stuff that everyone else was excited about, I guess I just don't care for. I did fall in love with books again, though, so that was nice. Everyone go read Kim Stanley Robinson! I'm also going through a cleansing phase (that sounds so new-agey!), and have sold away about half my CD collection (I got rid of almost 400 CDs in the past few months). It can be fun to get rid of crap you've hardly ever played since buying it - sometimes not for years! -Adam --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm about 3/4 of the way through Nelson Algren's "Man with the Golden Arm." It inspired me to go buy more, so after that's finished I'll be working on "Never Come Morning" and then I'll see if I can find "Walk on the Wild Side" which is supposed to be his best stuff. He won the first national book award. Tis a shame that he's starting to be eclipsed by time. derek -- eggytoast.com -------------- commerce soon: eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

since you've opened the OT discussion floodgates... recently my roommate lent me his copy of Tom Robbins 'Skinny Legs and All'... and I haven't been so strongly influenced by a book since I read 1984 in high school, or Breakfest of Champions after that... this is the first Robbins I've read, and though I'm not even through with the book I'm this close to proclaiming Robbins as my favorite author... by far my best discovery in 2002.... _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
