Bi-Wire has Volsoc's new release, calling it "Good German electro", which would make one think, or me at least, that Volsoc is from Germany. However, Volsoc happens to be a guy from LA, J. Bondy. I believe it's actually Jean Paul Bondy. Plus another guy. Is this false advertising? Or can German Electro be made anywhere? I'm so confused. the other guy of Volsoc (the SOC, or stupid octave cat, part) is Justin Maxwell, owner of code404.com and list moderator for the Nord Modular list. I'd say that, much like how "detroit techno" can be made anywhere, "german electro" is simply a term describing the general sound. There's certainly nothing wrong with using a place or a culture as an adjective, else you'd never have "latin music" made outside latin america, or various other musical genres. Again, the name is mostly meaningless. The place usually has historical importance regarding that particular genre, but it usually means little else (unless used in a separate context). derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I totally agree with what you're saying, but as you point out, the place does have historical significance, and since the text that I am referring to is an advertisement, it can mislead people into thinking "oh, this is Authentic German Techno", influencing a purchase that might not have been made if the buyer knew these guys are from Los Angeles, not Germany. It's like that IDM guy who produces under a Japanese sounding name - I forget what. But he's really some hispanic guy from Texas who moved to L.A. I guess it's the electronic music world equivalent of a boob job.
