my review for the new scheme:
Crunch : 2 : (I don't know the catalog number) : Colony Productions
Crunch (aka Dave Tipper) has long been known for amazing production skills
and a remarkable ear for groove. This is ever present on his second full
length under the Crunch alias. The album begins with 30 seconds of
manipulated orchestra strings and quickly flows into the second track, "Edit
2:" Deep hip hop basslines, crunchy (how apt) drums, shredded into millions
of pieces and arranged in tight patterns. The third (and my personal
favorite) track is a remix by the kind Funkstorung fellows. A truly
mind-blowing track, amazing programming, tight stabbing beats, nasty in your
face DSP (digital sound processing) effects. Crunch takes over again with
the fourth track "Cassette" - more tight beats, sort of church organ
sounding melody, and robot basslines. The album continues in a similar
manner on into tracks like "Bit-Hop" which is exactly that: hip hop chopped
into tiny bits, manipulated and re-arranged. "Vexem" - deep juicy bass
sounds, tight kick drums, computer glitches galore, and catchpenny audio
effects. To follow are remixes by L'Usine ICL (Isophlux / Delikattessen /
U-Cover / Hymen labels), Skoptik, Bit Meddler (Planet Mu), and others. In
summary, a completely smoking album as far as production and groove go, yet
painfully lacking in concept. Most listeners might be satisfied with a
laundry list of effects and neat noises, but this doesn't have a lot of
staying power in my book. The remixes interrupt the overall flow, and in
the end it sounds like a bunch of tracks put on a CD with no real purpose.
Perhaps in the future artists of the genre will pay more attention to result
rather than process. Crunch's '2' is a solid great sounding album with very
little musical depth. Tech geeks will love it.
