hi, i am curious about IDM/dub/jungle music creators using trackers for their music still. some good examples would be md - appelsap, between gaps (merck) - done in fast tracker 2 machine drum - now you know, half the battle, urban biology (merck) - all tracks by machine drum (not the remixes necessarily) done in impulse tracker 2 ilkae - pistachio island (merck) - done in fast tracker 2 brothomstates, previously dune of orange, who did everything in scream tracker 3, impulse tracker 2, and fast tracker 2, though i understand the majority of his new tracks are done in various newer softwares (logic, audiomulch, buzz) muffler, on urban takeover, with a cd on trsi recordz USED to use protracker and whatever other amiga tracker software, though i understand he uses "professional gear" now. psidream, can't recall what label he is on but he does some great drumnbass/jungle tracks in impulse tracker. most all of this stuff has been mastered professionally after being done in a simple, no automation/realtime effects/vsti environment. i'm curious if you are aware of other idm musicians using similar software? --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus] --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The rather excellent Lackluster uses (or at least used to use) trackers. I had Starcell U.K. in its original Impulse Tracker format... Lackluster and Brothomstates (and probably some of the others you mention) comes from the Amiga/PC demo-scene, where trackers were almost the only thing used to make music. At least until a couple of years ago, when mp3:s took over... (Which doesn't exclude that they still originally were in some tracker format ;-) MVH Magnus Karlsson <magnus@karlsson.com>

I did almost everything in FT2 as well.... I also used Rebirth a lot for my acid tunes. Also Alex Cortex (of Source Rec.) uses FT2... and VSNARES has a bit sounding like he uses trackers sometimes... and Bogdan Raczynski obviously... maybe OVUCA as well? hmm... anyway i like trackers becouse they are simple. i hate sitting as the computer all day long so at least i use an easy-to-use program :-) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i used ImpulseTracker probably more than anything thusfar in making music, and i'd have to agree that the freedoms of that interface over a step sequencer is far more conducive to writting "idm" beats. the major problem i came across with IT though was the overall production value. because it's all sample-based and not synthesized in any way, the quality of sound has everything to do with the quality of the samples. if you don't have access to good samples or equipment/softsynths to make your own, you're at the mercy of borrowing from other trackers and using samples recycled a thousand times over, likely made way back in the day when small file size was paramount for modem-powered bbs distribution. you can post produce everything if you really want to, writing out the individual tracks (channels in reference to trackers) to .wav, tweaking levels and then multitracking the whole thing back together with something like SF Acid, but it's a real pain in the ass. or of course, you could be into that washed out and often empty, flat sound. was never really happy with Buzz, and just about every other tracker (ScreamTracker, FastTracker) are really sub-par compared to IT. i eventually moved on to primarily cutting up beats with ReCycle and Dr. Rex'ing them into Reason. word has it that they're still working on IT v.3, but that's been something like 6 years in the making, bouncing from code monkey to code monkey to no avail. from the specs i saw on what they wanted to achieve with that, it would likely be a really phat platform for producing idm if it ever saw the light of day. all this info gleaned from my stint with the tracking group pHluid (http://phluid.acid.org/) as :m. zero. i still have a bunch of tracks i did in IT post-pHluid up at http://posthoc.org/anonbox/ if anyone would like to check them out. :mz // anonbox · http://posthoc.org/ | http://ecesis.org/ 'if there were two of you, which one would win?' --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
