I’ve been working on music for some years now and lurking on the list. Madrona Labs has a sale on their VST synths right now (https://madronalabs.com/topics/7466-end-of-year-sale-2018), and Kaivo is particularly interesting. Been thinking about getting it but was curious if anyone has any experience with it here. one thing a friend and i have recently gotten really obsessed with is the Xfer Serum https://splice.com/plugins/15493-serum-vst-au-by-xfer-records you can get it through Splice at $9.99 a month (it's like $200) i think it's a bit pricey for a synthesizer but, wow, you won't believe what it can do. if you've ever used z3ta or Absynth you have some idea what a really deep powerful synth can do. but then, much like the z3ta the interface is really kept simple no matter how deep you get (unlike absynth!) some amazing sounds, lots of videos on it on youtube as well i've noticed that some manufacturers must pay people to keep making preset banks and videos for their synths, or something, because if you look at : rob papen predator xfer serum native instruments massive spire lennar digital sylenth1 and a handful of other's you find HUNDREDS of banks of presets, tens upon tens of tutorial videos, etc Clint Anderson Systems Engineer "Freedom -- paint me a picture!" -- Burton Cummings On Wed, Dec 26, 2018 at 10:13 AM Luccas Dentzien <dentzien.lima@gmail.com> wrote:

Oh wait was I supposed to say what I’m interested in? Chicks. Guns. fire trucks. Drugs. The usual. Oh you mean in terms of music production? 😂 well anything that makes it sound fucked up. I’m dipping into modulars a bit and re-incorporating all my old hardware stuff into the studio after a year of soft synths. I’m using Ableton 10 and digging it. thanks for the mention of vector phase-shaping - found the original research paper which looks good - http://recherche.ircam.fr/pub/dafx11/Papers/55_e.pdf would you recommend any blogs or resources for keeping up with topics like vst creation and synthesis? Over the past couple of years I've implemented a number of synths (subtractive and fm) and effects (delay, chorus, reverb), mostly all from reading Will Pirkle - http://www.willpirkle.com/about/books/ I've also come up with my own granular synth implementation based on reading Robert Henke's design notes on granulator II - http://monolake.de/technology/granulator.html and the Microsound book by Curtis Roads. I've been looking for code and/or ideas of new fx or algorithms to implement. On Thu, Dec 27, 2018 at 10:43 AM Juho Hietala <hietala@gmail.com> wrote:

i'd be curious about if he approached (or anyone) Splice about their monthly payment stuff, like, I wonder if that would be an avenue to help him sell his synth (i personally am way more able to justify $9.99/mo for a soft synth than $100 outright) and i wonder if for example, he would get paid for the $99 upfront and splice collects the rest.... splice.com btw Clint Anderson Systems Engineer "Freedom -- paint me a picture!" -- Burton Cummings On Thu, Dec 27, 2018 at 1:05 PM Bobby West <erothyme@gmail.com> wrote:

i used the microtonic a lot "back in the day" i see they re-released the microtonic earlier this year in 64-bit but... eh more serum nonsense: the other thing i like about serum is it has great sounding fx which is nice if you're trying to buy all this shit for your studio, a $200 synth will also get you a full set of great sounding fx Clint Anderson Systems Engineer "Freedom -- paint me a picture!" -- Burton Cummings On Fri, Dec 28, 2018 at 11:28 AM Charles Terhune <crtdot@icloud.com> wrote:

Serem is tight. It's super popular in the EDM circles, but not in a cheesy way. It can be cheesy I suppose, but I believe Skrillex was the one who started putting it in the EDM zeitgeist with his strange dubstep sounds from his most recent record. The super gnarly stabs at 1:05 are serem for instance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkqyIoYAXV8 B On Wed, Dec 26, 2018 at 8:27 AM Clint Anderson <clinta@gmail.com> wrote:

yeah i'm really interested in wavetable synthesis lately, including the ableton wavetable instrument so i really like that aspect and just overall, it has a really pristine sound quality that few softsynths have, where it's comparable to hardware wish it was a ableton native device somehow so you could use it with Push , that's one cool thing about the ableton wavetable... Ditto what Kent said. I’ve been at it since I was 14. Turned to techno/IDM/electronic stuff in ‘93. Signed on to Analog Heaven then this one. I’m sure I asked a ton of questions here and there. Come to think of it also a ton over on the old Akai forum, too. Wow, that takes me a ways back. Just realized that the draft reply I began was sent incomplete. I’ve been making music of different genres for quite a few years. I was around Detroit when the techno/house thing took off, repairing musical electronics professionally. I repaired the sound system at Detroit's legendary Music Institute. I still own the tape machine that Derrick May used there for loops. I did repairs and customs for many of the notable Detroit acts and quite a few collaborations as well, almost all of which are uncredited. I played in punk bands, engineered for others, did warranty repairs for about any synth company (Sequential and Moog were still alive when I began), was employed at a larger live sound outfit, taught engineering, and ran studios. I've used almost all of the gear you can think of from vintage to software-based. I have little affection for cranky, old gear that makes me waste time at the workbench. I'm a firm believe that most classic recordings were great not because of the gear, but in spite of it. I used Camel Audio's Alchemy synth for much of recent work but, since it's only available in Logic these days, I spent some time researching what synths other non-Logic Alchemy user migrated to. One name that kept popping up was UVI's Falcon. I prefer the idea of having a number of synthesis algorithms under the same interface which keeps me from having to learn a multitude of interfaces ( I still own a Kurzweil K2500 for that reason). I was quite pleasantly surprised to discover that Avid had recently deposited a license for Falcon into my account (some kind of special deal). It seems to be all that Alchemy is and a bit more. I've done some microtonal ambient, and plan to do more, so it's ability to import scala tuning files directly was a nice feature. I also use a Yamaha MOX8 and AN1x (nice virtual analog) and EX-5 (the internal VL synth is pretty unique). https://soundcloud.com/eden909/demo-reel contains a wide variety of stuff I've worked on, either as engineer/producer/mastering or composer. Impressive ! Personal favorites : • 1:10 : of course ! • 2:22 : Garbage-reminiscent (and «more cowbell» too) ! • 3:13 : irresistibly catchy, unexpectedly love it — this is the «begging for more» kind ! And nice acoustic textures overall. And yes, Falcon seems to be the bomb. On Mon, Jan 7, 2019 at 8:03 PM Steve Gualdoni <sgualdoni@gmail.com> wrote:

Yeah, 3:13 is one of my faves too. I did a remaster for someone in an old IRC chat channel because he had won a record company contest. I was pretty amazed. Then I never heard anything else. The band name is out on a website but I don’t get any replies when I email him. I also have a niece that’s amazing but her parents were crazy with religion and most of her music involved that church. She’s written amazing songs but doesn’t reality want anything to do with music because it just takes her back there. <big sigh> Steve sgualdoni@gmail.com

Yeah I definitely enjoy making electronic music. I mainly use just some software but have dabbled in synths a little. I am currently working on some other projects but hope to get an electronic album out there sometime soon. Ben Gammons Sent from my iPhone

I’ve been working on music for some time, but only recently (~2017) started releasing anything (e.g., bandcamp<https://peterkudenov.bandcamp.com/>). Had a hard time finishing tracks until I forced myself to start focusing on one at a time until they were “done enough.” Use a mix of hardware and software to work on tracks--more of the latter these days.
