Why help, when I'd rather you drive over his face? Seriously, though, your question is probably better asked/researched at /., where you saw the info in the first place, no? welcome to the internet. you probably have a dozen of these applications running on your machine at all times. i'm personally very bitter about all these apps, and i've found my way to kill most of them. grab yourself an app called "ad-aware" first of all. very good for cleaning most of this spyware off your machine. as far as this microsoft one goes, remove "qtmtask" from your startup - keeps it from launching when you boot your machine... i personally use IBStartup Editor to kill everything i don't like. makes for a nice/quick startup now. then things like zone-alarm are a good idea to block any of these spy apps from accessing your internet (although i think some have found a way around zonealarm). it's really sick and sad that people can get away with these spy apps. i want to find the gator folks and pummel until i can pummel no more, and then... i'll pour sea salt on their pummel wounds. right, hope that helps jeremy acre ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Dooley" <dooleyc@firstcharter.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org>; <microsound@hyperreal.org> Sent: Thursday, August 29, 2002 1:09 PM Subject: [idm] please help http://slashdot.org/articles/02/06/29/1254230.shtml?tid=109 how the hell do you get all this crap off the computer!!! this is sick and i believed i did install this 1 month or so ago. help, as i am about to drive over bill's face with a tractor. d --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Ok sorry for being an unhelpful zealot. On my W2K box I use Norton Personal Firewall and make sure the settings are ultra-paranoid. Set it to alert you any time an outbound port connection is started on your box - it's interesting to see what apps try to connect out from your box ... and tell Personal Firewall (or whatever you use) to block those outbound attemptions permanently. That, and a good router protecting your various ports from inbound traffic, will probably make you feel a hellofalot better. Good luck! dave acre wrote:

i found www.agnitium.com and the little thing called outpost. seems much better than zone alarm. also why do u use startup editor? you can just go under run and put in msconfig and do it yourself? no need for another program. i actually was checking around and found this "loadqm.exe"? seems like some kind of program that keeps connecting to the ms site or something? my comp will be sitting still and i will notice that it starts working out of nowhere so i alt/ctl/delete and there it was? seems something to do with msn im or windows update or something. ms are some sneaky bastards! worse than spyware. it is private control ware. i am still unsure what qtmtask is? in any case i also went to infopackets.com and went back down to the player 6.4. though i wish someone out there knew how to get rid of this spy update? when you go to the windows update part of the site and check what is installed on your comp, it seems that with this so called security update install, along with many other recent ones, they all are incapable of being uninstalled in any way. check for yourself. especially under the recent critical updates under "Read first"? looks like some kind of reporting on what you are listening to and what you are watching on media player, along with trying to have something that automatically updates all ms updates. i know someone may know of some discussion room where this may be discussed if you are sick of it here and are unsure. and for the mac users who are probably saying, "get a mac and shut up." peace d

I have trouble playing cdrs in my car stereo, i think it's because it's a bit old. Have you tried Verbatim? They seem to be the only cds that play on all of my stereos. In my car the cds will spin for 5 minutes and finally catch, sometimes. And at home my little boombox cd player will play them up to the thrid track and start skipping. I get agitated, must have constant soundtrack........ Oh yeah, Men's Recovery Project is the shit. I've had problems with CDRs in everything from my roommates old car stereo to my Pioneer CDJ-700S. My CD burner spins at a max 24x. I have found that if I burn CDs at 8x or slower, they work in every CD player in my house and in roommates cars, etc. with almost no trouble. 4x guarantees no trouble whatsoever. It take a bit longer for them to burn, obviously, but at least they work. I have no idea as to the technical reasons why this works, as I'm no computer pro, but it has consistently done the trick for me. Hope this helps, Dave dave_dunstan <dominodigital@dominodigital.com> wrote: Maxell 650MB gold cd's were the only ones that would play in my old Kenwood car stereo. 700MB CDR's almost always did not work. I think you might be hosed. I have heard of burn speed relating to troubles like this ... I solved my problems by buying a brand new Mp3-CD player for my car, that way as long as you have a data CD, you're good to go in the car. I imagine once CD burning is perfected everyone will want DVDs instead, so you can have wacky 5.1 surround booming in the Toyota, at which point this will start all over again! dave On Wed, 2 Jul 2003, dave jakhelln wrote:

See, I'm not so sure about that. Anyone who's, well, driven, knows that even basic stereo panning can totally ruin a good track whilst in the car, mostly because the "sweet spot" in the car is the center console, where most people put some napkins and other random crap. That gets worse with 5.1 (and above), as the driver, without messing up the balance of the music so that the 5.1 is rendered practically null, hears the stuff in the top left speaker the best. And if the driver adjusts all of the speakers so that they play correctly for him or her, then everyone else in the car gets an even worse experience. I do love the idea of MP3 cd players in the car, though, as they make that whole idea of a cd player in the trunk seem even stupider than it already is :D Regarding the actual problem, though, I've found that a combination of burning styles (whether it's TAO, DAO, or whatever other features you've burned with) along with speed that can affect the quality of the CD that pops out. Many older CD players have weaker lasers so they're unable to read the less-reflective sufaces of CD-Rs. Similarly, CD-Rs burnt at a higher speed can have a higher incidence of errors due to the high burning speed that an accurate laser like a CD-ROM can read just fine, but a low-quality cd player can skip over, or worse give the "no disc" errrrorroorr. So, try a media with higher reflectivity (silver, light blue, light green), ortry burning at a lower speed. And make sure you're burning a basic audio CD as "disc at once," which can be easier on the toc for the disk. derek -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ it's in your grocer's freezer --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

yeah it is well annoying isn't it? on mine i NOW found out that i could get it to work. only i had to do it at 8x (even tho my cds 48x) and that on some systems it plays fine and on others the first track has like skipping in it..... and even tho the tracks fit perfectly together (its a mix) there is a jump between the tracks. anyway, i'll try to figure it out, and whats Men's Recovery Project and peas? nick :)

Eggy proposes: That gets worse with 5.1 (and above), as the driver, without messing up the balance of the music so that the 5.1 is rendered practically null, hears the stuff in the top left speaker the best. And if the driver adjusts all of the speakers so that they play correctly for him or her, then everyone else in the car gets an even worse experience. Taht's true, to a point. Personally, when I pick out a CD to listen to in the car, it's something I've listened to at home and enjoy it as-is. I'm one of those types that gets agitated when a song sounds drastically different simply due to the playback medium. Which is why I hate those jamboxes that roll off any bass below, like, 200hz. derek -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ it's in your grocer's freezer --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
