One a birth name and recording artist, the other an alias pronounced ODaahBree¹ (not pronounced rye like bread, closer, but still not quite like the remains of a destroyed hip-hop track). There are two distinct sounds and directions from one young early-twenty-something, self-proclaimed "hermit" from Michigan. Critically acclaimed producer, DABRYE (for our purposes here), has been making incredible music for a while now. Beats. Like somewhere between broken Detroit techno and D-Town¹s Jay Dee (aka J Dilla), both of which he has close relations. Recently, DABRYE was asked by the Soulquarian J Dilla to submit some beats for his new record, set to be released on Dilla¹s own MacNASTY imprint. In addition, DABRYE was a crowd favorite at the highly celebrated Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF) in 2001, where he played a well received mash up live PA set of DABRYE and "other projects", which included some ragga jungle bizness and some sick drum, bass n¹ hop joints. His debut as DABRYE came in 2001 with a very coherent survey of instrumental tracks that never strayed far from one another. Synthesized bass, dirty, filtered, clap compounded snares and flangered samples were programmed to make the masterpiece called ONE/THREE (released on the GHOSTLY International label, where he also sometimes records under the JAMES COTTON guise). It was a version of this record that caught the attention of SCOTT HERREN and PETE RENTZ (label heads of EASTERN DEVELOPMENTS MUSIC). The result of some phone conversations, time management and inspiration is the new miniLP, INSTRMNTL [EASTERN DEVELOPMENTS 002]. This is some hot shit ! The damn tracks are smokin¹ ! "I don't have a typical formula, really, when it comes to the sounds I use. I often make my own bass sounds and they are always pretty simple," DABRYE tells of his trade mark low end, "like a square wave with low pass filter and just the right touch of chorus on it." Far from being a bonafied gear head, yet more simply just a studio recluse with tools he¹s managed to gather over the years, DABRYE does make his way outside from time-to-time to DJ, perform and to work part time at the Encore record store in Ann Arbor where he now lives. Aside from seeking out all and everything that Jay Dee puts down, DABRYE says that he likes, "Mahmoud Ahmed, Fela, Timbaland, EarthTone3, Big Tone, Neptunes, Talking Heads, Kraftwerk, Gamelan music, and post-war [WWII] composers like Subotnick, Dockstader, Reich, Riley, Polansky..." quite a mixed bag and yet somehow there is a nod to all of it in his music. "As far as keys and horns, drums..." he continues, "I'm all over the place. I'd like to think it doesn't matter by the time I'm through with it. On INSTRMNTL, I think you can hear the evolution from ONE/THREE. On the other hand, with songs like 'Evelyn' and 'You Know The Formula Right?', I tried to look back to the mid 90's a bit and bring back that old feeling again." Indeed, the big progression, rather, musical standout for INSTRMNTL is it¹s playful, more often loopy feel and window into DABRYE¹s personality. It¹s still super chill and a little retarded S "krunk" as the Atlanta cats call it. The cuts are very electronic and bouncin¹, but there is more of a focus on hip-hop in a fun check-out-the-phrase-I-just-lifted-from-this-ill-old-record kinda way. It¹s not the gray scale of ONE/THREE, more the colors of a new season. There are only so many ways that you can write about music like this. At this point, we will refrain and encourage you to check it out and enjoy ! TELEFON TEL AVIV TELEFON TEL AVIV is Joshua Eustis and Charles Cooper ­ two New Orleans natives who began working together in the summer of 1999. Initially drawn together by a mutual love of innovative classical music, TT immediately began developing their unique, melodic sound ­ a hybrid of live acoustic instruments, electro-beats and exploratory studio techniques. After gaining attention of HEFTY Records through a four-song demo, TT commenced work on their debut full-length, Fahrenheit Fair Enough. During this time, they also collaborated with Danny Lohner (of NINE INCH NAILS) on three remixes, which appear on the NIN remix EP, Things Falling Apart (Nothing, 2000). In September of the same year, TT was recruited to compose the original score for a feature film by Kyle Cooper (founder of the Los Angeles design firm, Imaginary Forces, and director of the groundbreaking Se7en main title sequence), entitled New Port South (Touchstone Pictures, 2001). In addition, TT recently collaborated with John Hughes on Slicker¹s The Latest (HEFTY34) and completed remixes for Detroit jazz legend and Tribe Records founder, Phil Ranelin (HEFTY37) and Hughes¹ Scarlet Diva (HEFTY24 / IA#006) soundtrack. T.RAUMSCHMIERE "If the New Rock has no guitars, then this is its Elvis Presley, its Gary Glitter, its William S. Burroughs. T. Raumschmiere is a swaggering thug, decked out in shades, cigarette dangling, and wrings his gear like the throttle on a Harley Davidson. It¹s 4/4 punk-electronix with grey doomscapes and crunchy "knarz". T. Raumschmiere is ready to lay waste to everything in his path." more info: www.shitkatapult.com KNAMIPROKO Since forming Knamiproko nearly two years ago, Ryan Rasheed (Prefuse 73, Leblaze), Shana Wood, (SEP contributor) Chris Case, and John Simmons have worked themselves into a spot on the cutting edge of Atlanta's electronic underground by slicing into both aural and visual stimuli and as Rasheed says, "bringing the bump for the rump." Everyone in the group brings their own background, contributing bits of hip-hop, jazz, electronic music, and visual arts; without addressing any social or political issues other than what Case explains as "bringing a little flavor back to electronic music."
