Doom Generation had an Aphex track in it, plus some industrial and metal stuff. Not sure if it had more 'idm' than the Aphex though. There were a number of other movies by the same director which had an occasional moment or two... The Iron Man Tetsuo (already mentioned) had a pretty wild soundtrack and is a pretty wild movie. Have heard bad things in regards to the sequel. We just saw a movie that had an *excellent* soundtrack, but we can't see to come up with a name on it to save our lives. We were impressed because it was a big name movie.

Someone else mentioned an Orbital track in Johnny Mnemonic, which reminded me of the Michael Kamen/Orbital score for Event Horizon. It's a pity the soundtrack album is out of print, because the Orbital bits were nicely expanded upon, very atmospheric and moody. Although not really IDM, the likes of Eraserhead and The Elephant Man contain lots of industrial ambience and dissonant tones. Elsewhere, Lynch's stuff gets close to an IDM aesthetic, albeit more from a Trent Reznor & Rammstein angle. Lost Highway is particularly effective in this regard. The whole soundtrack to Blade Runner (not just the Vangelis score but everything else) is an ambient noir masterpiece. You can pull the entire 2-hour soundtrack off the film, minus the visuals, and enjoy it as a wonderful piece of sound design. -- Mark Stevens http://www.insertdisc.com/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Iron Man Tetsuo, B+W, japanese w/ subtitles, has quite the score if you like old style heavy AFX/industrial trashcan-beating 'IDM'. Worth watching anyway. I keep a DVD copy around as a litmus test. 5th Element also had sort of an IDM/ambient score. That bit with the techno opera shit kind of ruins it for me, though. Johnny Mnemonic has an Orbital song from the brown album on it. The Stallone 'Get Carter' remake has some IDM moments. But both of those movies suck eggs. There are also lots of independent flicks with techno/IDM-ish scores out there. Of course I can't remember any titles. IMO unless the director is trying to specifically make the setting appear bizarre/futuristic/super-hip, IDM intrudes more on my viewing experience than it influences the scene. It's used in car commercials to get your attention for a brief moment and induce a feeling of speed. Most IDM has way too much shit going on to be used for films. Luc has a new one coming out with Jason Statham as lead: The Transporter. Poster has Statham in an inconceivable leaping pose with two handguns + the title lettering smashing into a BMW. Looks ace to me.

I never accused our mystery man of being any good. I just said 5th Element had some IDM moments. And hey, The Professional had that Bjork song in it. Anybody who likes any of Besson's films should definitely check out 'La Dernier Combat', BTW. Tom P.S. Huh huh huh, you watched 'Rollerball'. http://us.imdb.com/Title?0293662 should clear up the misconception about Luc Besson directing this film. "our mystery man" is none other than Eric Serra a fine musical composer and artist who unfortunately landed the role of writing the score for the ill fated remake of Rollerball. Why throw away money when you can simply d/l the streamed movie the weekend of their releasal? ps. James Caan (aka Jonathan E.) --- Thomas Millar <tmillar@comcast.net> wrote:

And what of Luc's 'Taxi' films? Although every time I mention Taxi to my mates, they think of that Rob De Niro one, but these are way better. It's a more hip-hop influenced soundtrack, but they are definitely films to watch, highly funny. For me, Assault On Precinct 13 has to be my defining soundtrack. Again, not strcitly IDM, but it is completely synth-based. And a great film to watch late at night. It seems to have more atmosphere when you watch it in the dark. I think this was misunderstood. I video'd it and watched it the day after, during the afternoon and, suprisingly, it sucked. Then I watched it again a few days later at around 11:30ish and it rocked. That's what I really meant. Sorry. Rich ---- Lord of the Rings LITE(tm) -- by J.R.R. Horrible horrible movie, though.

I agree, the soundtrack to L.I.E. is a beautiful wash of glitch and texture. One of the best example of an IDM soundtrack I can think of (next to maybe Pie). Here's the link to the soundtrack page. Most of the artist responsible our "up and coming" and unknown to me. http://www.lot47.com/VideoDVD/LIE.html
