No offense to anyone or anything said, but PLEASE take all this political/ethical business to another list to debate...I don't think anyone on here joined this mailing list for this sort of thing... If you all who are perpetrating this want to further dilapidate this forum for discussion of *music*, then go right ahead & continue posting... but that is just disrespectful to all the list members who wish to discuss the namesake of this list, experimental electronic music...At the very least, if something overly off-topic gets posted, and you feel you have to respond, then please reply privately. This this the "Intelligent Dance Music" list, not the "Intelligent Discussion of Morality" list...Please be mindful of others & treat it as such. Thank you. I did. Well, at least I joined to better appreciate the mindset of people with similar tastes. Here in the basement, I don't have many friends. Just my com.a cd. Seriously though, about 95% of the "off topic" discussion is in some way related to idm or idm artists. Perhaps it is a bit heavy on the non-idm side, but usually I can find some relation. Observing the deterioration of a once meaningful string into "off-topic" jargon is actually good way to place idm/electronic music in the context of a larger world. The bottom line is that I delete most of my mail anyway. It isn't a struggle. A good bit of these seemingly off-topic posts are of interest to at least a few people and not minded by many others. Perhaps the ease by which massive amounts of e-mail can be deleted is indicative of a technological era that allows the user to ultimately personalize his interests. There can't be a mailing list for "the moral politics of prefuse73 music found in corporate america", so perhaps the current thread best resides here, long winded and "fuck fuckidy fuck fuck" as it may be. It seems to be a small price to pay, having to dodge less than 100% pure idm topics in order to allow each user the benefits mentioned. respectfully, ov __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I just read a comment in this thread regarding people not wanting to "sell out" by having their photograph taken. I for one, am a photographer, and I have been summarily disappointed by the infantile behaviour I have encountered at times when trying to photograph people whom I consider to be extremely talented. My photography is my creative outlet, as opposed to making music. My subject matter of choice has for years been whatever music I am exploring. I have been inspired by the work of photographers like myself, who decades before me, hung out in smoky places capturing on film those wonderful moments with their own vision. I would argue for this, if only as a visual way for these moments to be experienced for those not able to be present, for limits due to distance, or time, or whatever. Perhaps what is being debated here is the intended imposition of instant(only) gratification, versus a more comprehensive comprehensive of what is really going on in this "music scene" I would encourage those who are incensed by this thread to take a minute to evaluate their current value system regarding IDM, and see if perhaps it could stand a little expansion. cheers, Lisa b David Ferguson wrote:
