i know about the similarities of recent material and the current retro-electro movement, but i'm really only interested in the original roots. i know there must be some really brilliant stuff out there but i can't figure out any names as there are but melody fragments and obfuscated childhood impressions in my head (my father used to listen to a lot of that stuff)... henry

I always recommend David Toop's book 'Ocean Of Sound', as it covers pretty much everything in the 20th century. It's got more of a slant towards ambient/experimental, but includes several other genres along the way... A good resource for any study of music. Ocean of Sound is an wonderful, wonderful book, but it doesn't even try to be a detailed information source on specific genres. I'd recommend it to anyone on general principles, but I'm not sure that it's what Henry was looking for in this instance. David
