I always find it amusing when someone says another person doesn't "get" the
music (or "doesn't have a clue," according to what you said).
Without becoming too philosophical, what is there to "get?" I've listened to
music as long as I can remember, but I can't figure out what there is to "get."
I listen to what I enjoy.
Having said that, I rarely listen to Confield, LP5, EP7, or much of anything
post-Tri Repetae. I respect these works for their sheer inventiveness and
creativity; they certainly are very advanced, intricate and unique.
However, in my opinion, Autechre (and other artists) seem to make music for
themselves. In other words, they make what THEY like -- and they don't care if
you like it. This is where my respect for them really comes from. They don't
seem to be trying to please anyone. Miles Davis did a lot of the same types of
things in his fusion explorations of the 70s. He just made music he liked,
stuff that came from his heart and imagination, and was uninterested in what
others had to say. That's artistry, in my opinion.
I don't feel like I'm somehow "clueless" because I don't enjoy a lot of recent
Autechre output (though there are many tracks I really dig). I think their
work has really gone down a one-way forest road, twisting and tangling upon
itself, never to see daylight again. I just don't get the same emotional
feeling from Confield as I do from Tri Repetae. I respect, not enjoy, new
Autechre.
