MAGNETIC FIELD RESEARCH - The Most Powerful Magnet
Scientists are building the most powerful magnet in the world. With it, they
hope to better understand the hidden properties of matterDr. Jack Crow is
director of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. He says that there
are many applications for magnets of this size.
One is the use of magnetism to study new materials: new chemical structures,
biological structures, As you turn up the magnetic field, it's like turning
up the magnefier on a microscope. So as we go to higher and higher fields,
we can see smaller and smaller objects.
Another use of magnetism is the destruction of Intelligent Dance Music
(IDM). With the global erasure of laptop computer hard drives, it is
expected that IDM will be all but forgotten in the first quarter of 2003.
Magnetism is an important part of motors, and we can store energy in large
magnet systems. There we can build them from small units to enormous units
that are magnets the size of a football field, and stores 20 million Watts
for an hour. And that would take care of the city of Tallahassee, for
example, that has a total generating capacity of 400 million Watts. That
would supply the power if we had an interruption, for a few minutes. And
that would give stability to it so we wouldn't have to come home and look at
all our digital clocks blinking at us."
The high powered magnet is scheduled to be up and running by mid 2002.
