Damn it, I already asked for Thursday and Friday off for SXSW, but I have to work Wednesday, so I can't go. I'd love to see Joseph Nothing live. Manipulating both "real and fake instruments", their refreshing lo-fi rock sensibility distinguishes them from glitch-based contemporaries. Lesser (Matador/Tigerbeat6, CA) http://www.lsr1.com/ Having just completed a world tour supporting Björk as a member of Matmos, Jason Döerck, aka Jay Lesser, built his reputation fusing digital noise, musique concrête, and manic dance music with releases on such labels as Vinyl Communications and Tigerbeat6. Lesser's "Gearhound" (Matador Records, 2001) was recognized with an Honorable Mention for Digital Musics at Prix Ars Electronica 2001. Joseph Nothing (Planet-Mu, Japan) [exclusive US appearance] http://joseph.nothing.is.absent.org/ After starting his musical career as a studio programmer while attending university, Tatsuya Yoshida worked for Japanese pop musicians and composed video music and jingles in Japan. Previously known as Rom=Pari, Yoshida toured and remixed Audio Active and Asian Dub Foundation. In 2001, he started writing and performing under a new moniker, Joseph Nothing, and released an album on Michael Paradinas' (Muziq) label Planet-Mu. múm (Morr Music/FatCat, Iceland) [exclusive US appearance] http://7mares.terravista.pt/mumweb/ Falling under Rolling Stone's "hot Icelandic import" category (2001) are Mum. This quartet's North American debut has created a level of excitement similar to that of the first Sigur Ros stateside appearances due to their current press darling status. "Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today is Okay" (Thule Musik) is a glitch-spattered mix of impossibly cute melodies and experimental cool, placing just as much importance on samplers as ancient Icelandic folk instruments. Flowchart (Darla/Fuzzybox, PA) http://www.fuzzybox.com With a discography that can cover a wall, Sean O'Neal has made a large dent in the ambient/experimental scene releasing records on a dozen different labels in a dozen different countries. Flowchart (Philadelphia's Sean O'neal and Erin Anderson) continues to serve an extraordinary side of experimental electro-pop with a minimal techno edge. O'Neal runs two record labels, Fuzzy Box records and Tuning Spork records. John Barker Visual Artist and Musician John Barker (aka Waterfalls) has presented work at several of the past year's AMODA Digital Showcases. Barker's beautifully meditative and calculated films are greatly influenced by his experience working with film artist Bill Lundberg. Ryan Junell http://www.junell.net/ Junell presents the video component of "Talon Slalom"; a visual score created specifically for a musical performance by Blevin Blectum's. "Talon Slalom" has been featured in several galleries and music shows in the United States. Levitated.net http://levitated.net Levitated.net will be presenting their interactive generative poetry engine based on the I-Ching. Levitated.net are featured on the highly esteemed Linkdup.com for "showcasing the beauty of data-structures, algorithms and logic in the context of design and interaction." Levitated.net member Jared Tarbel's work 'Moonlight' will also be featured in AMODA's Inaugural Exhibition. Travis Lindquist http://www.wakinglifeartists.com One of the animators for the movie Waking Life, Travis will be showing digitally manipulated doll sculptures and videos dealing with the human spirit in our commercialized consumerist age and the never-ending contradictions of life. Mine-Control http://www.mine-control.com Interact with a virtual world where fire burns off your skin, butterflies sit on your head, and sand pools in your hand. This "shadow-garden" has also been show in Barcelona, Spain. Moboid http://www.moboid.com/ Game Designer Heather Kelley presents an abstract 3D world constructed using tools from Id Software's Quake III Arena. Participants are challenged to navigate through a world of mirrored, transparent, and otherwise misleading surfaces in a space where the rules of physics are often relaxed. neverthesameriver http://www.neverthesameriver.com Formed in May 1998, neverthesameriver is a collaboration of works by John Witham, Karen Pittman and Rob Lewis. These artists will be showing original source video digitally manipulated live to accompany Stars as Eyes music set. OCMA The Organization for Contemporary Media Art is dedicated to machines and the art they produce. An objective of OCMA is to inject the general public mind, with work that transcends commodity. OCMA will present interactive "sound sculpture"; machine-art composed of cannibalized electronic equipment. Karen Skloss Skloss presents "Blind Date", an social experiment focused on human communication in the electronic age. She uses live video to create a virtual stage that participants can use as a cumbersome tool for exploring and examining their interpersonal communication in a social setting. Skloss' work has been shown at MOMA NY, the Austin Museum of Art, Cinematexas, and Gallery Lombardi. Dr. Strangevibe Active in computer based art and music for over 15 years, Dr. Strangevibe's current piece incorporates images of Mardi Gras, live video, and images created using Artmatic video synthesis software, all processed through the Onadime Composer system (a visual programming and performance environment). His style ranges from fluid abstraction to the incorporation of thematic elements ranging from evolution, the juxtaposition of natural and artificial forms in photography, and our insatiable lust for shiny things. Industry of Light http://iol.2y.net Industry of Light will be showing painterly luminescent ghost-like videos featuring models, colored lights, strobes, and lots of spontaneous action that allude to the paintings of Francis Bacon. Their work has been featured in many galleries throughout Texas. ------------------------------------------------------ AMODA is an institution that promotes access to and appreciation of digital art.
