wondering if anyone's used this service to purchase music and what they thought of it seems similar to ebay, but at a more infantile stage _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

yeah, i've used gemm from time to time. it's not too bad, but the main problem is that all these little record shops who list their catalogues don't seem to ever update them--so when you order, you often find out later that they no longer have what you're looking for. i've taken to calling or emailing vendors directly to ask them to check their catalog before i place an order for something rare. it's not so much like ebay in that there's no bidding--the prices for things are preset by the vendors. -rachel (aka dj pie) -- "at this time you can feel balance strength and sphere peaceful levitating the window." --from the instructions sheet for my "magnetic suspension lamp" On Fri, 1 Mar 2002, nlo gax wrote:

GEMM isn't a seller per se, but more like a compendium of sellers...or rather a forum for separate sellers. Therefore, it's a crapshoot , the results of which depend upon the individual seller with whom you deal. I have grabbed MANY an otherwise impossible to find gem through GEMM. For every disappointment, I have a handful of happy endings to offer. My modus operandi is this : before I will bid on ebay (or if the price gets high), I will check half.com and GEMM to see if I can get the item in question for a lower cost. Also, since stock changes and more sellers come and go via GEMM, I find myself checking back there often. Been using them for years; the feedback system (those stars next to the seller) serves to let you know if the seller is one of the stores which simply lists everything as "in stock" and never updates their inventory (e.g., Rockhouse). jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

as a gemm seller phlowtoonz.gemm.com i am obviously biased, but my advice is to check the customer feedback ratings. one of the bet things about the WWW is people are candid. if the feedback is good, you can probably feel good that the selection is really there and goods are as represented. respect, Jeff Davis fon: 216.266.69696 pHlow@earthlink.net fax: 216.266.2360 home.earthlink.net\~phlow cel: 216.533.6303 hyperreal.org\music\rotator\ -----Original Message----- From: Mxyzptlk [mailto:jpklein@telocity.com] Sent: Saturday, March 02, 2002 9:09 AM To: nlo gax; idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] gemm At 08:49 PM 3/1/2002, nlo gax wrote:

i get most of my new idm through www.skimo.com. the guy who runs skimo, pj, sends out a mailing every weekend with the new stuff and restocks, and you can either order on the site or by email (he stores your payment info). i've had nothing but a great experience with skimo. of course, this is not so useful if you're looking for older/rare things, but to keep up on all the shiny new idm and also electro and more, he's your guy. most other stuff i try to buy direct from the label, from my local huge used cd emporium (hurray for amoeba records!) or other smaller online distributors. for more mainstream stuff i like www.cdconnection.com -- they NEVER list stuff they don't have in stock, and they have a surprising amount of not-so-mainstrream stuff, like pork and warp and so on. good luck, -rachel (aka dj pie)
