Start with all/most of the "artificial intelligence" series on warp. Autechre's "Tri repetae" with garbage and anvil vapre EP. Bola's Soup Boards of Canada "Children have the right..." Future Sound of London, either Lifeforms or ISDN System 7's Fire+Water... Qubism's "2294" Vladislav Delay "Multila" Rechenzentrum "The John Peel Session" Solvent "Solvently one listens" William Orbit "Strange Cargo 3" Pete Namlook + Higher Intelligence Agency "S.H.A.D.O" ( either 1 or 2 ) Monolake "gravity" Don't know if I can include some of these : "Lali puna", "Miss Dinky", or some micro-house like Vita or Auch because they offer something different ... --- Maximilien Lincourt Max At Toon Boom Dot Com Codito Ergo Sum --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Choose a Squarepusher release; I recommend 'My Red Hot Car' Choose an Aphex Twin release; I recommend 'Drukqs' or the 'Girl/Boy' EP Choose an Autechre release; I recommend 'Tri Repetae++' or EP7 Boards of Canada, "In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country' Something by Bogdan Raczynsky, 'My Love I Love' maybe??? V/A. 'Lily of the Valley.' (Schematic.) DNTEL. 'Life is Full of Possibilities.' (Plug Research.) Something by Cex, I recommend 'Oops, I Did it Again.' Delarosa and Asora. 'Agony.' Schematic. V/A. Warp 10+3 Remixes. (Warp.) This list is by no means definitive, but I think you'll find that alot of it is recommended by most folks. I'm kind of backlogged in terms of the new stuff on the bleeding edge, and I'd like to see what other people recommend beyond the standards. g. On Thursday 17 January 2002 04:02 pm, you wrote:

Interesting question. Without trying to think about it too much, these come to mind - not necessarily as favorites, but as "must haves" as you say. For starters, the classics: V/A - Artificial Intelligence [I or II] Autechre - Tri Repetae++ Autechre - Chiastic Slide Aphex Twin - I Care Because You Do... Boards of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children ?-Ziq - Tango 'n' Vectif Squarepusher - Hard Normal Daddy Then a taste of newer trends and alternatives: Prefuse 73 - Vocal Studies & Uprock Narratives Four Tet - Pause Matmos - A Chance To Cut is a Chance To Cure V/A - Clicks & Cuts Autechre - Confield Fennesz - Endless Summer That's 13, which, being a magical unlucky number, will make you fall obssessively addicted to this stuff, such that you will have to buy the following: everything else by Autechre Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works vol. II Squarepusher - Big Loada Squarepusher - Music Is Rotted One Note and then you'll come crawling back to the list for more suggestions based on what you liked... ===== .Adam http://www.damek.org/ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Wow, impressive Adam, you just named the exact titles (minus BoC) that got me into IDM. My friend had these and started making copies of them and sending them my way. By the time I heard Tri Repetae++ I was hooked. -Chris --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

RDJ album - Aphex Twin Tri Repetae++ - Autechre LP5 - Autechre Everything else by Autechre Hard Normal Daddy - Squarepusher In Pine Effect - Mu-Ziq Music Has the Right to Bear Children - Boards of Canada Hydro Electric - Phonem Basically I'm suggesting you get something by the bigs guns. Phonem isn't really a big name, but its a pretty blissed out cd. On Fri, 18 Jan 2002, lysaabi wrote:

I've just got into IDM myself, so I'm actually glad that this question was asked. The albums/EPs I've currently got are: Future Sound Of London: Lifeforms Future Sound Of London: ISDN Autechre: Incunabula Autechre: Lp5 Autechre: Peel Session 2 Aphex Twin: Drukqs Amorphous Androgynous: Tales Of Ephidrina (this is really FSOL under a different name). I also have 'Monochrome Plural' by Fizzarum and 'Music Has The Right..@ by BoC coming anyday soon. These albums have got me into IDM, so much so that I joined this mailing list! Dunno if that's any help to you... Moz --- lysaabi <lysaabi@earthlink.net> wrote:

THIS THREAD IS HILARIOUS! I am having a hard time keeping a straight face hearing Artificial Intelligence and FSOL being tipped in such hushed tones. Makes me feel old, but proud to have been there as this wave of electronica was breaking. My recommendations are similar to others (AE, some Aphex, etc.), but here are a few off the the track being beaten by this thread: Biosphere -- Substrata (super icy ambience, but sometimes there's sunlight on that ice) Woob -- Woob (out of print, the label em:t, went under. Tracks from their catalogue can be heard at http://www.emit.cc) Spooky -- Found Sound (a band that quit while they were ahead, quite an amazing album, has a bit in common with Ae, esp. the way some tracks seem awfully harsh to begin with, but soon win you over with a stealthy bit o' melody) Spooky -- Stereo EP (4 tracks, 4 incredibly different tracks, all amazing) Orbital -- Brown Album Gas -- Pop (anything by Gas, really. Remember there are 2 Gases in circulation Mike Voigt and Mat Jarvis. I am talking about M. Voigt, tho' M. Jarvis is OK too.) Higher Intelligence Agency -- Freefloater (another band to exit while in top form. I don't know for sure that they're gone, but its been a while. This CD is a bit of a genre-bender kinda minimal electro-disco. Great.) Black Dog -- Music for Adverts (and short films) (Polyrhythmic extravaganza, quite spare sounding, but with lots happening. Note: first track is NOT spare sounding, its kind of a maximalist ditty.) There's more of course... Besides all the usual Warp type stuff that's gonna get listed I'd also recommend the following: some proto IDM: Cluster - Zuckerzeit Harmonia - Musik Von Harmonia Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express - The Man-Machine - Computer World some post A.I. era seminal influences: Farmers Manual - FSCK Oval - one of the earlier ones I suppose V.A. - Basic Channel (Basic Channel) V.A. - ...compiled (Chain reaction) - or you could just get the Porter Ricks and Various Artists cds Wolfgang Voigt/Mike Ink/Gas/M:I:5/Studio 1/etc. Ryoji Ikeda - O*C or +/- (both on Touch) Panasonic - Vakio Pole - Pole 1 V.A. - Mash The Place Up (Ambush label compilation) Phthalocyanine // Andrei --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

it's funny in that I didn't own a squarepusher album or anything by Aphex beyond the girl/boy 12" until around 3 months ago... and had mostly forgone the classics (FSOL, artificial intelligence comp., etc.) in favor of skam/schematic/morr music etc. but now I'm discovering all the early influences (by way of their recent releases, mind you) and it has been a real ear opener. on the other hand, there is some really good stuff out there right now. even the so-called derivative/programmer virtuoso stuff that people criticize as being formulaic sounds pretty damn good to me. g. I always end up telling people to get Aphex Twin:I Care Because You Do..... This was one of the albums that really got me into electronic music all together so.... And if youre going to get into Autechre, you need to get Incunabula. You've already got a lot to go on and there is no doubt more to come. dont rush out there and drop a few hundred dollars on a shitload of new cds... cruise used bins and pick up the classics as you find them. Warp 10+2 or LFO's self-titled would be the ideal starting place, but they'll run you out the bank before you can get to anything else. buy what is availble in the used bin for the least amount of money-- search the understock, everywhere. repeat in one month, when the used selection has changed completely. if you find Maximum Priest before Big Loada, or LP5 before Tri Repeatae first, dont sweat it-- youll get it all eventually. save yourself a fortune, educate yourself, and stay current with the last months most overhyped and returned album. i think i started with a four dollar used copy of Artificial Intelligence 1. also, try half.com, you can make a wishlist and set a maximum price and get notified when they come in. ebay is your friend. schmoko. ----- Original Message ----- From: "lysaabi " <lysaabi@earthlink.net> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Thursday, January 17, 2002 1:02 PM Subject: [idm] starter set
