Exposé Review: Larry Kucharz - “Techno Unit 32: Misc. tracks” (International Audiochrome IA32, 2001, CD) Here’s something completely different. After numerous ambient and “floating electronic” releases, Kucharz offers a solid workout in modern electronica, complete with complex chattering rhythms, repeating melodic cells, ringing synthetic tones, and driving bass pulses. While the eleven tracks herein bear generic titles like “U333, Minimal Techno” and U922, Dub,” most of the material here is anything but generic, and in fact is very forward looking, mostly eschewing danceable styles and going for the cerebrally sublime. The disc starts out alternating between bold, striking compositions like “U312, Techno” and more subdued pieces that demands close attention, like “U962, Progressive Classical.” With track 5, the disc takes a turn for the far more interesting (and catchy), with more rhythmic and melodic substance, and it’s rapid-fire chattering complexity and pulsating polyrhythms. Track 6, U310 Hardcore’ with it’s ringing patches and throbbing bass pulses is certainly one of the high points of the disc, leading into the even more hard driving “U311, Progressive classical,” with its brilliant shimmering high-end subtleties. While some of the remaining tracks explore “cooler” (and more danceable) dub rhythms and get a it more repetitive and predictable, there are still plenty of surprises therein. - Peter Thelen Exposé at www.expose.org ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- available from cdstreet.com http://www.cdstreet.com/artists/internationalaudiochromeinc ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ available from amazon.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Armchair DJ Interview “CLASSICAL TO TECHNO TO CLASSICAL” Larry Kucharz interviewed by Brian J.
