would most idm works be considered a song or a track? just wondering... for some reason i equate tracks to techno/house type stuff and songs to brit pop and new wave, etc... what the hell are these? maybe their word jumbles in the case of some autechre tracks... who's the guy who has that series of records with everything named after a girl's name? if a booty bass dj battled it out with an idm dj would it be DDM vs IDM? what's the name of Mark Bell's new album? and does anyone listent to Vromb? well, songs deal with lyrics and singing, etymologically speaking. it mainly deals with "singing musically," and isn't solely human or technology based, as we also have bird songs. tracks are technically bits of music put together, like a "4 track recording," but can also be representative of any recorded aural medium, such as a "laugh track," and so on. Usually tracks support someone singing, as anyone who happened to watch the ball drop last night and was forced to see the horrible stage acts 'perform' heard (while everyone on stage was prancing about). However, a track could also be a song, if you think of it in technical terms, whereas a song could be interpreted as a track with singing. so you'll usually hear techno and other non-lyrical music forms referred to as tracks, although it's usually pretty ambiguous among most people, and music with lyrics and singing referred to as songs. orchestrated music is often referred to as "pieces," although I haven't looked into that. derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- snappy one-liner

Someone posted about Anima being constructed from a very technical process. A friend of mine that heard it said he was just dumping sounds from a sampler (which I thought not). What is a good piece of software for sound design, and what is thought of Csound? Thanks much, -D By the way, I liked Anima. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Believe what you want... It doesn't really figure that he just uses a sampler, if he does then technically speaking he must spend weeks accumulating his works

Sound design software is most difficult when using CSound - It is all text based... The (for me) best program + probably the most powerful is MAX/MSP. Most older sound designers I know use anything from basic sequencing in Logic to editing tools such as sound maker or soundhack It really depends on how innovative the individual wants to be. Does that help? Lee --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

There is no single piece of software I use for Sound Design. On any given project, I'll use ProTools, Digital Performer, Hyperprism, Reason, any myriad of plug-ins...and then there's all of the out-board gear at my disposal... Different tools will arrive at different results under the guide of different hands....just play with what's out there and find out what's best suited to your particular mode of thinking. Cheers! -paulp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I agree totally... for every piece of sound design work I have done I have always used a different format. Pro-tools I think is much better than using SoundScape, Premier or Avid... I suggest investing in the hardware, I find the free download to be very limited. Yeah, I'm totally with you there. I just bought an 828 for my travelling gigs....but I think I'll probably pick up an M-Box when it comes out since I do a majority of my work in ProTools (which doesn't want to play nice with the 828). -paulp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah the DAE doesn't like the MOTU...I already tried to work it out. So I have been using it with Logic, works pretty well with the pro-logic surround The M-Box is more £$ though isn't it?
