man, phoenecian warriors my ass! those guys just suck. i just picked up "brownout", and just like autechre's "cornhole" this stuff is straight potty. right down to the crappy artwork. yeh, let's have another flash-inspired simplistic, meaningless, omniscient sense of self-worth indicating graphic design piece for a shitloaded digipack. i need another one. to put on my collectible/fragile part of the cd shelf. which is now buckling under the weight of this incredibly dense field of dsp krap that goes just absolutely nowhere. ahem, melodies, please? sounds like a bale of marijuana being dropped over the everglades, hunh? all i hear is how those guys are so cool, and nice, and how they hang out with autechre... and don't even let me get started on those guys. the day they left their fresh-ass-break-beat-with-meaning style on incunabula was a sad day indeed. "brownout" should have been called that because that's what it sounds like happened in their studio when they made it. it's about as boring as it gets. c'mon, lets hear some more of that 'rhythmbox' miami boyz! --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I have been on this list for 2 days. Can I expect a "things aren't the way they used to be" review for every new album that comes out? go get a delorian and hit up early 90's and stay there you loser. according to you, lets all just do the same shit over again. heard of abstraction? maybe youre not intelligent enough to pick up on new melodic/ rhythmic endeavors. d wow man, youre really innovative. --- Grady Stiles <gradystiles@mac.com> wrote:

No, but you *can* expect this list to be a place where people often express their opinion's of music - whether it's old music or new. | -somrux. why the heck do we insist on classifying "IDM" as the same old artists. i dont even LISTEN to aphex or squarepusher anymore. squarepushers last decent album was big loada. aphex's was the RDJ album! autechre hasn't made a good album since Chaistic Slide. the point is is that the face of good electronic music has changed, and we have to admit this, instead of telling people to go buy Autechre's back catalog. With artists like B. Fleischmann, Abfahrt Hinwil, Solvent, Arovane, Prefuse 73, and many others coming on strong, there isn't any reason to continue talking about has-been artists who haven't made a decent track since 1997. And even if you want to talk about "old" classics, why not bring up stuff like Funkstorung, Bochum Welt, Cylob, and Push Button Objects? The 1990's weren't owned by RDJ and Booth & Brown. Continuing to pigeonhole the idea of "IDM" into the few artists constantly mentioned limits the scope of records that new members may want to check out. While I am not saying that somrux was saying exactly what I am talking about, his comment shows how limited in diversity most of the music mentioned on IDM is. i, for one, cannot even fathom how so many people have chimed in about aphex's new CD drukqs. do we really need 50 emails with one-sentence replies about how good or bad you think it is? the man hasn't made anything worth talking about in years. why do we hang on, waiting for any piss of his to hit our ears? why not read some release lists and get listening to some new music? my rant is over. replies with actual thought-out sentences will be read. anything else will be ignored. shane --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

this is interesting.. because phoenecia's newest album is one of the first things by them i've heard that's really interested me. i actually enjoy the artwork... as i do with most schematic releases. i do rather like that schematic has branched out to include other illustrators/designers than strictly the designers republic. from the sound of your post, you don't like nice artwork? or digipacks? or both? i'd certainly rather have something nicely designed (cliche or no), be it a digipack or a jewel case, or a sleeve, than another run of the mill jewel case with hacked out artwork that looks like it took 2 min in microsoft publisher... what i like about brownout is that it evolves over the course of the album... and while some of it is completely abstract DSP-type stuff, there's plenty of more accessible material on it as well, a fairly healthy balance in my opinion. sorry you didn't like the album.... although it seems as though you are still stuck on the music of 1993. i really like the old warp stuff, but i also really like where it's gone, shot off in all sorts of weird directions. as for the comparison of autechre and phoenecia... i don't really have any vested interest in whether they "hang out" or not, nor do i find any distinct similarities, other than that both have migrated progressively further away from what could be considered "typical IDM".... not a bad thing in my book.

+------------------------------------+ m.mercer audio-visual communicator http://www.matthewmercer.com/
