Is anyone out there going to the Skinny Puppy reunion show this weekend in Dresden, Germany? I wish I could be there but I'll be stuck in LA being the good worker bee that I am. Anyways, if anybody does go, could you post some review as to how they sounded, what songs they did- stuff like that? This is a somewhat funny story - a week or two ago I was spinning one of the mega rave-type clubs here in DC. My pretty standard fare: techno into tech house into house. Fun dark groovy stuff. Well whatever, I was playing for a bunch of e-crazy morons who just wanted to hear pumping tracks and I'm sorry, but I offer music with a little more depth. So I was somewhat dissapointed at the response (or lack thereof) and around 5.30 my friend tells me I'm the only DJ left spinning that night. So I figure it was time to finish up and dropped that last track on the BoC "hi scores" EP - really kinda floaty and slow. The track did something for me and I was wanting to spin some more so next up was one of those cheeky pop sounding tunes by bochum welt. After that one of the guys working the club told me to pack it up... BUT - during one of the last tracks some dude comes over to me and starts telling me how great he thought my set was. pauses and asks, "did you listen to skinny puppy" 'course that comment totally caught me off guard and then I smiled and said yeah. my theory is that he must have been on some strong acid to dig that I like SP out of my set. Afterwards some other girl came up to me and gushed about my last few tracks. hehe And thus I've decided to spin no more techno and stick pretty much to deephouse and all this nonsense we talk about here. :) -Gil --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I definitely agree that there were more dimensions to Skinny Puppy than the horror/goth element of the band. Unfortunately, all too often, Skinny Puppy are usually mentioned as "one of the bands I used to listen to when I was a goth kid". (Then again, Puppy were my very first concert experience ever... VIVSECT VI tour, at the Variety Arts Center in L.A., fall of 1988... though I was hardly a goth kid. :) While I dig Speedy J's "A Shocking Hobby", the more beaty tracks keep reminding me of the beats and noises that Skinny Puppy, Coil, Severed Heads etc. churned out in the late 80s. But that final track on Puppy's "Last Rights" -- "Download" -- just defies any genre pigeonholing in the electronic phylum. That song is just a silencer. It not only demands but captures your attention. I'm unfortunate enough to own the CD with the 40 second offsetted mastering fuck-up, but thankfully the 40 seconds of silence after this track just adds something even more to it. ======================================================================= Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> KUCI 88.9 fM in Irvine, CA -- Orange County "I FOCUSED... Hey Mr. Ebola- what mix is this? Also, I picked up the new live Skinny Puppy cd over the weekend. Outstanding! The first hits of Deep Down Trauma Hounds gives me goosebumps. I never really liked the album version of Killing Game, but this version I like- the vocal is a bit more melodic. Inquisition is unbelievable. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

oh my. this again. if you think the process is bad, go back and listen to mind:tpi again, then listen to tooo dark park. then listen to back and forth 6. then come back and say "oops, wait, sorry, thats a pretty predictable musical evolution." except for candle. that track sounds too much like midnight oil. or you could keep rehashing the same "TOO DARK PARK IS THEIR BEST ALBUM" shit that seems so popular on these newfangled email group thingers. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

first half of rabies, then second half of last rites. then t.f.w.o. who wants to work on an accoustic cover of it?

bah. on that note, how can people be all about download or cevin key and not dig the process? i can fully understand why people arent into optimissed, but thats pretty atypical for anyone associated with it. i mean, listen to III or eyes and then crank blue serge. maybe drop it a few bpm. if you dont hear a lot of similarities, either you're not listening or i'm weird. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It's already floating in soulseek. To me it's a big disappointment, the style is not so different from the track from the Underworld soundtrack. Too soft... Too similar to the Ohgr stuff. I expected more from cEvin Key. Well, maybe with more rotation.... who knows... so ago wasn't their best work ever, but I'm very much looking forward to the new album. When is it to be released? Before summer I think?

Just because it's put out under the same name doesn't mean it's ultimately by the same people or, hell, even if it's the same people that they're going to do the same style they have in the past. i mean, keeping it entirely list-relevant, look at how much autechre has changed. And those are the same guys. Assuming that skinny puppy, a band that did most of its output in the late 80's/early 90's, would sound anything like it did then, is, well, i'll let you think of it. But it's also why you can't base things on just who is involved. Take the music for what it's worth. even though in this case it looks like it's not worth that much ;D derek -- eggytoast.com : eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

this is pretty much how I see it... no, its not the same material puppy released years ago, but if it were, why not just reissue those old releases? why even bother?

hey - otto von schirach is involved with three tracks on new puppy (for list relevence, although obviously I feel it is regardless) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

exactly. which is why i wonder about the person who thought they were silly based on a live show in 86. images stick in our minds sometimes more than music. would you have thought they were silly if you hadn't seen them? have you listened to anything else outside of that period? not to kill a dead horse, but things done on 'last rights', particularly "download" use techniques that would later be used in other electronic styles discussed on this list. glitches, CD-skipping, plunderphonic-type sample lifting. and hardly a danceable track on there. having said that, most "industrial distorted vox" is pretty tiresome to me too, but i guess with puppy and ministry i put it into the perspective that they are the ones who perfected (if not originated) that, so i accept it a bit more from them. but it all depends on the song. there are no sacred cows to me, even the best bands are capable of total shit. and puppy are far from the best band. but they were fairly important. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I wasn't expecting skinny puppy to sound the same as they did in the 80s/90s. I hoped there would be some more influence from what cEvin Key ha been doing in his more recent releases, like "ghost in each room", or download's "effector" or even plateau's "Iceolator". More IDM in their music, basically. The problem is they followed the path of the two Ohgr albuns, aproaching electroclash and 80s revival...
