The Straight tone arm does lose an unoticable amount of sound quality. I'd imagine the damage would be proportional. And you can fix this by adusting your cartridges about 20deg outward so that it somewhat emulates the effect of an S shaped tonearm. (The same can be done for S-shaped tonearms to improve tracking ability). I don't think this should be a concern. As far as the stantons go, They seem to have some nice features, though, durability and over all craftsman ship may suffer. Ive heard some pretty good stuff about them. I'd imagine they're among the best entry level turntables aside from maybe the top notch numark and gemini turntables. You get what you pay for with music equiptment, in particular turntables. As for cartridges, I use a pair of American DJ bananas which are patented by ortofon. They've proven to be excellent scratch needles, though you can't adjust the cartridges like I mentioned above. Stanton 500's are always a great cheap cartridge to buy ($30.00?). I am partial to Shure and Ortofon needles. The more you pay the better the sound quality and or tracking. But I wouldn't pay more than $50 for your purposes. Check out www.djcafe.com for cartridge posts in their forums. Hope this helped! wErd hExx PS: oh yeah, dont get cd decks. You said you wanted to experiment....its all about vinyl for that, if you can afford records (much goodness is out of
