If you're in the market for a computer that is $1k or
more, then macintosh is a very cost effective platform
now. If you want a cheap box to surf the web, go pc.
But Apple has brought it's prices inline with the rest
of the industry for more powerful machines.
The new iBook was even hailed as the most cost
effective laptop by the New York Times. it offers a
crisp screen at high resolution (96 dpi), ethernet,
firewire, modem, two independant usb ports, video out,
audio out, it's wireless internet ready via an
optional airport card, and it comes preinstalled with
both Mac OS 9.1 and OS X (build 10.0.3). And it's
light (less than 5 pounds) gets 5 hours on it's
battery life, and is as small as it seems a reasonable
powerful computer can get.
I bought one with a DVD drive and an extra 128 megs of
ram, in nyc (paying sales tax!) and it cost me a
pretty $1600. not bad. Drop the dvd drive and it
starts at $1299. great price.
ok, let's not flame each other over this, but while
macs used to be way pricey, they are quite affordable
now. And powerful, especially for music, as i'm sure
most of you know already.
