If you're in the market for a computer that is $1k or more, then macintosh is a very cost effective platform now. If you want a cheap box to surf the web, go pc. But Apple has brought it's prices inline with the rest of the industry for more powerful machines. The new iBook was even hailed as the most cost effective laptop by the New York Times. it offers a crisp screen at high resolution (96 dpi), ethernet, firewire, modem, two independant usb ports, video out, audio out, it's wireless internet ready via an optional airport card, and it comes preinstalled with both Mac OS 9.1 and OS X (build 10.0.3). And it's light (less than 5 pounds) gets 5 hours on it's battery life, and is as small as it seems a reasonable powerful computer can get. I bought one with a DVD drive and an extra 128 megs of ram, in nyc (paying sales tax!) and it cost me a pretty $1600. not bad. Drop the dvd drive and it starts at $1299. great price. ok, let's not flame each other over this, but while macs used to be way pricey, they are quite affordable now. And powerful, especially for music, as i'm sure most of you know already. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Unfortunately, not so. Even regardless of price, Apple's laptops are good choices for their better battery life, but their desktops are still more expensive than desktop pcs. I wish it were otherwise, so I could get an apple, as well. This came up recently on another list I'm on... For the same price as the middle-range mac, I can put together a dual athlon 1.2 box with four times as much ram (ddr) and a better video card. And I don't mean to argue over platform either, especially considering that I like both for different reasons. -- -Gregory I hate trying to come up with something worth saying in a .sig file. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

guys i don´t get it: we all know there´s different machines and OS types out there. I don´t see the major advantages from one system over the other really. Apart from Silicon Grafics machines which no individual can buy. In any case: the ongoing PC/PPC discussion just stops us from more important things to do. All available PC/PPC types today supply great workstations for all kinds of workfields, and even all of them have their certain flaws. and there´s no workstation yet, which would play guitar or sing just 1% as good as everyone of us does. funny, jayrope • rope ------------------ self-drawing netart application: http://www.jayrope.com/autojayropinsky.html ------------------ music: ROPE etc: http://www.jayrope.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
