Yes, he's from Canada. And so are Tomas Jirku, David Kristian, Solvent, Lowfish, Legion of Green Men, Manitoba, Pheek, Akufen, Richie Hawtin, Jetone, Deadbeat, I Am Robot And Proud, and lots of other good IDM/electronic artists. Venetian Snares is not just good, he is fucking klalkasfjdlasfj phenomenal. If I had my own private jet or around 400$ for a plane ticket, I would have to toss a coin between going to see Monolake in Columbus, Ohio and Venetian Snares in Vancouver. Or just buy my own venue out here in LA, get ahold of them both and put on a party with both of them playing along with L'uisine, and I can think of wayyyyy too many other people I would want to play with them, but i dont want to go too far... And this venue would have absolutely perfect sound and would be right next to the ocean... I need to go home, i've been at work for way too long.

For a nice sampling of more-or-less Canadian artists you should get the Snow Robots compilations on Suction Records. Doug wrote:

Speaking of Canadians... I really really like Upstairs Recordings label from Vancouver. Not IDM whatsoever, just superb downtempo. They have a pretty good website too http://www.upstairsrecordings.com i hear they are really cool as well...

I believe the original VR releases should be getting repressed soon, and the new album is downright friendly to my ears, although not as ear(th)-shattering as the first one + Versions. Essentially, it's a mess of very lovely analog glitch with the occasional burst of warm pop love. The French Paddleboat release, which is all chimey and nice, remains one of my favorite summertime-in-a-room-with-windows albums, right up there with Amateur View by TRR. Hell, just check out Scratch recs and vegas canada in general (if the latter's still extant). Friendly people.
