If you like electro-pop, Fischerspooner's CD is a must. They self-released a full-length self-titled CD with 8 tunes maybe a year ago on their own label For Those Who Know. The same album with a different track order is due sometime soon on Gigolo (if it's not already out). I believe their first release was the Emerge 12" on Serotonin, which features two of the tracks that are now on the CD--Emerge and Turn On--plus a couple remixes, one of which alone (the Selway remix of Turn On) makes it worth the purchase, if you can find it. That 12" is a very new-wave, somewhat kitsch style of electro in the same vein as Ladytron, Console, I-F, and Adult, but even better. Recently a so-so Adult remix of Emerge was also released (on Gigolo probably--I don't have it), and in addition to the "real" release of their album some new remixes will probably be coming out on Serotonin, according to label's head honcho Selway. Also there's this new track Sweetness or Sweetness 2 on Napster that's alright--nothing special. The two comps I know they're on are (1) the Gigolo retrospective 2-CD that just came out (reviews are encouraged), which I probably won't get because I have most of those tracks but I'd still like to know how it is, and (2) another more obscure comp I'm aware of is the Fakeways: Manhattan Folk CD which features a bunch of arty underground NYC groups like FrSr and some interviews. Has anyone heard this? How is it? Here's the URL for Fakeways (with a couple FrSr photos): http://www.demon.co.uk/momus/fakeways.html Also see: http://www.demon.co.uk/momus/thought110500.html What a great little scene! If I lived in NYC I'd eat that shit up. Anyway, the Fischerspooner CD is one of my most beloved albums. Very accessible with lyrics (in 2 out of 3 songs) and catchy melodies but great production/songwriting, definitely not for IDM purists or glitchmongers but for all of us folk who like witty underground electro-pop with bizarre vocoded poetry and happy bouncy rhythms. One of the guys--either Fischer or Spooner--writes the lyrics and the other guy produces... and there's two women singing... I can't be any more specific without the liner notes in front of me, but it doesn't matter. I've never seen them (I guess they don't come out to central Wisconsin too much) but they seem to be fairly famous as performance artists, performing in big cities like NYC quite a bit, and expect costumes and choreography. The lyrics are really great. Lines like "Now I'm pouring sweetness" and the heart-felt croon "Sparkling files, electrodarts" really hit home for me. Their few slow songs are my favorites. Tone Poem took me a couple listens but is absolutely beautiful and only a couple minutes long. My other favorite track is the second track on their self-released CD, called something like 18 Day Week or something...something about days in there. It was composed by somebody else for them. Their more party-oriented songs like Emerge, Turn On, Invisible, and Sweetness are all decent campy SEXUAL electro-dance floorfillers. It seems like these guys are quickly rising out of the depths of the underground... lots of random folks from random parts of the country are getting into them... like in Chicago... and me (a.k.a. the Madison Wisconsin electro-pop scene)... and you. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
