something I posted a while back: When I picked this up the store owner told me that is was a lot like autechre. Usually when I am told this, I stay away. However, upon first listen this was very different. It is definitely inspired by the AE boys but Funckarma have taken it up another notch. This sounds like what would have happened if AE was signed to Hymen (a sub-label of Ant-Zen) instead of warp. The music on here is full of emotion, mechanical, distorted and coming from a dark aesthic. There are very few albums that get immediate repeat listens from me (I.E. letting the CD player loop). This is one of those albums. -daniel: Head Monkey: Mad Monkey Records: http://www.madmonkey.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

funkarma pts 1 & 2 vs. ep7 - both are going for intricate, "crunchy" rhythm programming. melodically they are both going for that semi-meloncholy, detached sort of vibe. imho one succeeds and is the real deal and one is a watered down version that just doesn't 'gel'. ] and furthermore (not meant for anyone in particular)... as for those who feel that the list is no place for negative reviews (aka contructive criticism), well, imho, you're wrong. criticism is an important part of keeping any artform healthy and strong. peace- roy -- On Wed, 09 Aug 2000 15:55:02 Twine sound wrote:

Cool. Lay down some criticism: I'll certainly cheer you. Now that we know your opinion on Funckarma, bring on the criticism. ("Real deal" vs. "watered down version that just doesn't 'gel'" only gives me the barest idea as to why you don't like them.) How about a few sentences explaining just how they fall short of the mark? You'll have my support, and likely a lot of other list members. I'll give you my criticism: AE have a phenomenal sense of sonic counterpoint, setting contrasting sounds against each other in a way that fits naturally. Funckarma doesn't, such that the sounds seem more selected on their individual merits and not as much for how they interact with each other. And there is AE's secret weapon: melodies. Yes, even on EP7 there are tunes (though not in as conventional a sense as, say, Amber -- more timbral than tonal). Finally, an AE track tends to evolve smoothly over its duration in interesting ways; Funckarma is more episodic, and the progression within a track doesn't have as much a sense of "inevitability" as many AE tracks do. (And some of the "episodes" seem to grind on past their point of interest.) But I enjoy Funckarma anyway, for what it is. They aren't AE clones. They use some of the same sonic elements as AE, but in different ways. I prefer AE, for the reasons given. Your mileage may vary. -Ed --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

actually i went to the orb show in detroit a few weeks ago and there seemed to be some discontent between the members there too but i think that revolved around equipment problems. it makes you wonder though how many orb band members have come and gone - jimmy cauty, chris needs, mark weston, andy falconer, andy hughes, greg hunter, thomas fehlmann. could it be that Alex is "A Huge Ever-Growing Pain That Rules From The Centre of the Universe?" : ) i believe the current lineup of the orb includes d&b producer Witchman (who also did a forgettable set at the orb show in detroit). aside from that, the orb did a great set featuring most of the ultraworld & uf orb classics with only a few of the newer tracks (which dont deserved to be heard anyway). -->-Lance---- PO Box 450715 Westlake, OH 44145 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I was up right at the front of the crowd and it was mostly technical difficulties that were frustrating them. When 12:30 came around coachella shut the power off on them. They only got thirty minutes to play because the other bands before them were running late. So after that they were really pissed. Thats why they kept walking on and off stage and just started throwing stuff into the crowd. In all Coachella sucked. Well, it sucked compared to the festival last year. chris -----Original Message----- From: ethereon ...(([-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-]))... I'm sure that the new Aphex Twin will be interesting, and maybe even good, but there are loads of people that y'all should be jumping and screaming about: Pretty much everything on Planet Mu Yee King Colongib, and the whole Kracfive Clique Tigerbeat6 stuff, especially the newer artists Merck -- they just plain don't make bad records or CDs Atmosphere -- damn that's good hip hop. BipHop -- yeah Marumari -- Supermogadon is the scheiss, nicht ficken wahr? and so on, and so on... An Aphex Twin album is something to look forward to, but there's so much else going on. He's got his bank vault, he's got his tank. Unless he can somehow one up any and all of the guys above, why waste time worrying about him? In terms of anticipation, I'm a LOT more interested in Rich Devine's next CD this fall. People who understimate him do so at their peril. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I like the CD, although the second half gets a little weak - interested in more, still.

can't decide if I like it or not. magic moments, to be sure, but worth keeping? still can't decide. no offense to them, it's a matter of taste.
quoted 1 line Tigerbeat6 stuff, especially the newer artists> Tigerbeat6 stuff, especially the newer artists
not my taste, though the Cex album was ok :P

I quite agree, though the first two were less impressive (to me!) than the more recent output.

Waiting for my copy, when I get money to buy it Well said about not worrying about Aphex - It'll be out when it's out, and we'll all either shit our pants or gnaw off our legs, and then it'll be a year later and we'll all be wondering "what next?" again. Boy, does this existence suck, or what? Ha.

I don't know - I really liked his first EP on Schematic, but the album, while I enjoyed it to a point, was lacking something in comparison, and I'm not sure I really need more of the Devine sound at this point. In fact, I haven't even paid attention to Schematic since that album. Well, I mean, I sampled Otto's and Phoenecia's CDs, but it all just seems ... stale lately. That's the word I've been searching for all these years! At any rate, I'll sample his next efforts, but unless it either goes back to the EP sound (can't really describe the difference) or goes somewhere else that's magically delicious, I'll not hold my breath. Anyways, I'm happy to see some music content on the list - less excuse for me to be the asshole I like to be sometimes. The only thing I'm getting my boxers in a bunch waiting for is Freeform's upcoming burst of output, and maybe the upcoming Proem minidisc (and more?), although I hope he takes the Proem sound somewhere else on that release (like he's been saying he is), because the Proem sound as it is now will quickly become stale, too... To my ears anyways. -Adam [I'm such a bastard. And run-on sentences to boot!] __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo!
