to bring this thread into current related info, i just received a promo copy of the new release on Lo Recordings by Alternative 3. Alternative 3 is a collaborative project between members of Add N to X, Hairy Butter and Stereolab. Stereolab only participates on select tracks, but the release flows fairly well between the expected acoustic experimentation from Richard Thomas and the sci-fi-kitsch of Add N to X and electronic doodles from Stereolab. What I have come to determine however is that despite Hairy Butter's (very humorous) press release on DEI, rather than being the 2 girls they claim to be, it has to be none other than Jon Tye and Richard Thomas. (I've used my not-so-brilliant powers of deduction on this one based on the liner of Alt. 3) In any case, I think this is a fairly interesting release. Anyone who heard the track on the Lo sampler "Fresh Fruit" earlier this year should know what to expect based on the selection showcased there. More info from the DEI site: Original Soundtrack featuring Add N to X, Hairy Butter and Stereolab. Conspiracy theory alert! IT IS TOP SECRET - AND IT IS TERRIFYING. IT IS ALTERNATIVE 3. The most astounding and frightening conspiracy ever! Research for what was originally intended as a straightforward TV documentary on the scientific 'Brain Drain' from Britain revealed some extremely disturbing things: Many people joining the Brain Drain are vanishing off the face of the Earth - literally. Earth will soon be unable to support life: our climate's recent strange behaviour is only a warm-up for the cataclysms to come. The super-powers have been working secretly together in space for decades. Government agencies are kidnapping ordinary people and turning them into mindless slaves by advanced brainwashing methods. Astronauts' reports of strange things they saw on the moon have been suppressed. Ultra-secret joint US/USSR conferences are being held each month in a submarine beneath the Artic ice-cap. An international government conspiracy so monstrous that the human mind can scarcely grasp its true enormity. In 1977 Anglia Television aired a documentary called "Alternative 3" as one of their 'Science Report' programs. A3's basic premise is that our planet is doomed to die from global warming and America and Russia, after secretly co-operating for decades, have colonized Mars with selected superior humans and plan to leave the rest of the human race to die when the time comes! The response to the broadcast was unprecedented with many people phoning in, newspaper articles and even questions in the house. In an effort to stop the panic the producers of the program issued a statement claiming that the show was in fact a hoax and had been originally scheduled for broadcast on April Fools day. Some time later a book was published also called "Alternative 3", which claimed that the story was true, but that pressure from the 'powers that be' had forced Anglia TV to deny it. The book provided much evidence to support the story and a cult was born. More recently one of the authors, Leslie Watkins, revealed that he had intended to write a follow up called "Backlash to Alternative 3" but that a chest containing that material was mysteriously lost when he moved to Australia. This bizarre story has now been made into a major feature film starring Cornelia Fischer and Oliver Tubb, with a suitably eclectic electronic score featuring Add N to X, Stereolab and Hairy Butter that recalls classic sci-fi soundtracks of the 70's such as The Andromeda Strain and Demon Seed. A web site with further information, stills from the film and links to other relevant sites such as thule.org where it is possible to view the original documentary, will be launched to coincide with the release of the album. The film itself will be released in the summer of 2001 with preview screenings scheduled to coincide with the release of the album.
