A quick synopsis of tonights show at the Detroit
Contemporary.
It was nice very cool being able to meet up with Bill VL,
Mike Taylor and especially Bevan (Aspen) and Clint (ISOL).
(I shouldn't forget Kelly, Matt, Nate, and the one fella from
the ambient list..)
I came in a little late, just caught the latter part of Bill Van
Loo's subdued, dub infested techno material. He began
to insert some interesting tweaks around the beats that
was a definite toe tapper. The dub was in their too..
Bevan Smith (Aspen) came out at around 11pm to instill
some of his newer Aspen material that treads along a guitar
driven electronic atmosphere of subtle ambience --some voice
overlays as well. Bevan also played out some of his new(er)
material. Hard to explain the style, but it is a propulsive mix
of digitally maneuvered beats, and solid yet soft basslines
rummaging through the debris. He then moved into his Signer
guise, and was even able to incorporate some new (upcoming)
material for involve such as Slo-Mo, Jet Jaguar, ISOL, and Signer
(of which is now signed to Carpark for a full length, i believe).
Shortly after Bevan collage of abstract bass throbbing music,
Clint (ISOL) connected his laptop to the 1287 feet of wire and
managed to insert a quality mix of minimal bursts to amplify
and even compliment the often bass driven structures of Bevan's
set.
Overall, a short turnout, with standout music that i sincerely think
deserves more credit in and around the Detroit area.
You may soon hear the entire Aspen vs Isol live set on Audio::
Nimbus in the next few weeks alongside a full profile. So stay
tuned for that..
Kudos to Mike Taylor for a job well done in the coordination
side of things, and the players for shifting our ears to the
left.
Pietro.
