I just discovered the mp3 record label No Type (www.notype.com) and decided to randomly download some of their releases. I grabbed release #45 because it seemed fairly recent and I liked the title and the artwork, etc.--had no idea who it was or what it was gonna sound like. The release is by an artist called Camp and the title is "feministe." I can't stop listening to it now--it is really good--it just "clicks" for me in a way that a lot of IDM doesn't. I was wondering if anyone knows who this is or had any info about other releases, etc., as the site doesn't really give a lot of info about the artists. Also, I'm wondering what's the difference between something like this that only gets released on an mp3 label (which is an incredible concept in my opinion) and the stuff that makes it to vinyl? These tracks (and most of the other stuff I've downloaded from No Type) are easily as good as the majority of vinyl releases I hear, and I would be first in line to buy them if they were in fact released on vinyl. Am I in the minority or are there other factors coming into play here? I do realize that tomas jirku, who started out on no type, has since released a lot on vinyl (I'm about to pick up his "sequins" album on Force Inc.), but what about this other stuff that I like so much? Will I forever be deprived of the opportunity to devour this music outside of mp3 format?? thank you. andy

heh heh, all good IDM at least. I actually downloaded some more of the No Type stuff, none of which is quite as good as the one I originally posted about. There is one release by Dick Richards (#43 I believe) called "Incongruence Signal" that is stellar also. I would still love to get some info on this "Camp" artist though. I didn't realize there was a whole plethora of mp3 labels out there releasing really top-notch music for free. Almost sort of a utopian idea isn't it? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Fahey" <Chris.Fahey@raremedium.com> To: "'Andy Battle'" <abattle@bu.edu>; <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Saturday, April 21, 2001 5:03 PM Subject: RE: [idm] camp--"feministe" (no type 45)

yeah...both camp and dick richards are damn good. i've actually burned both releases on to a cd-r and they compliment each other well. i believe camp is the main man behind notype: david turgeon. he's actually on this list...so i'm sure he'll clarify this......some other releases to check out[which in my opinion are all excellent;but i wouldn't consider them all idm]: -matrix assimilation:_influenza_&_acid vaudeville_ -andrew hayleck:_the paranoic_ -tomas jirku:_the viceroy_&_833-45 vs tomas jirku_ -thin:_moody hat_ -themoonstealingproject:_msp.003/nt[ep]fkm_ -3code:_daddy_ -and pretty much everything else. for those who aren't familar with notype...there's a cool start. also keep an eye out for release #50. notype's first cd compilation. this should be really nice.....anyways, take care and have a good day. :headphone science http://www.audiogalaxy.com/pages/review.php?band_id=90409
