Like the crackhead I am, I've been feenin' for the new ae album. Just for kicks, I looked for it on napster, and whattaya know, I found a few tracks labeled as coming from 'confield'. (yeah, yeah ... unlike a lot of people, I also buy the record once it's available) Does anyone know if these tracks are authentic? I'm fiending for ae too, and have been periodically checking for Confield tracks on Napster. I found a few the other day: Bine, Cfern, and Parahelic. There were two different versions of Cfern, one that was 700 some kbs and the other that was like 6 megs, I don't remember it being too impressive. They were not the same track. The Parahelic track was 6 some megs too, I think. And it sounded like it could quite possibly be ae. The Bine track was only a few hundred kbs and it didn't strike me one way or the other as being ae or not. At any rate I deleted all of them a few minutes after listening too them, I decided I'd rather just wait till the 30th than listen to tracks that may or may not be ae, Vis Inack has left a bad taste in my mouth. From what I've been hearing, the longer ones are not real. Actually, I recognize one of those as a Leila track! The shorter, cut off ones? ... I dunno. I'm going to come clean... I actually created the "fake" Confield tracks. Or, to be more accurate, I simply MP3d a few bits and pieces of electronica in my collection, choosing ones that could vaguely pass for Autechre, and then sit back to watch the fun begin! Why did I do it? Well, I just knew curiosity would get the better of some folks. It appears that quite a few people thought they were genuine. I thought people would guess a lot sooner -- the tracks I've chosen aren't *too* obscure and most Autechre fans should have some of these in their record collection already. And for another reason, I wanted to maintain an air of mystery about the album before it's release -- with loads of different tracks masquerading as Confield tracks, the challenge would be to decide which was real! Most people I've spoken to on Napster about the fakes (I've actually told people as they're downloading) thought it was quite funny. A few missed the point and thought I was doing "a bad thing", but I dunno -- I got some guy interested enough in Arovane to want to buy "Atol Scrap" and "Tides". The "smaller" Confield tracks out there *are* Hrvatski tracks, but I did *NOT* upload these. Oddly enough, I checked them out, liked them, and now I'm going to be buying some Hravtski stuff ASAP. Everyone's a winner. For those who are interested, here's the tracks I used: 00-whord (hidden) = david arnold - "doctor who theme" 01-vi scose poise (bola remix) = node - "terminus" 02-cfern = eu - "loopmind" 03-pen expers = leila - "from before...what?" 04-sim gishel = arovane - "actel" 05-parahelic triangle = susumu yokota - "gekkoh" 06-bine = pole - "klettern" 07-eidetic casein = monolake - "nucleus" 08-uviol = susumu yokota - "kodomotachi" 09-lentic catachresis = cristian vogel - "rescate freeformed giggles" Of course, it stands to reason that if you like anything you heard, believing it (or not) to be Autechre, then you should run out and buy all of the above! Well, I went and downloaded every Confield track (or fragments of tracks) I could find on Napster (a few dozens) and I can tell you that not one track I downloaded is by Hrvatski. And while I'm not familiar with a few of the tracks you list, certainly none of the tracks I got are by Pole or Monolake. The only one that I can safely say matches is the Node track. So, I'm not sure where that leaves us. Here ends the joke! I wasn't going to say anything, but I can't have Hrvatski taking credit for my 15 minutes of effort :) Yes, You know those Hrvatski tracks you speak of? Well, jack ... demz ain't Hrvatski. I don't know who determined that, but, whoever did, thanks for making me laugh so hard. No sir, in fact, those "tracks" were made by 2/3 of Team Techno ... that being Myself, and Cerebral. The other night, I was bored. Very bored. So, I sez to my pal Cerebral, "Hey, lets be complete shitheads and make some cruddy, mock ae tracks, label them as tracks from Confield, and throw them up on Napster!" Five minutes later, we had both completed 2 tracks. I did "Parhelic Triangle", and Cerebral did "Bine". Congratulations, now I'm interested in downloading some of those tracks! But you were really obvious, Leila, Pole and Monolake are relatively easy to detect. I don't think that Leila track sounds like Autechre, by the way. That's what I thought, although it didn't stop people downloading them. And when I fired up the instant messager and said, "These are bogus, it's actually so-and-so..." the usual reply would be, "Are you sure? It sounds like Autechre to me!" I would have thought most Ae fans would be into the likes of Leila, Pole and Monolake, but apparently not!

This is pretty great. Applause for doing that... nothing elevates the interpreted quality of music more than blatant misinformation. You get the prankster of the year award. The funny thing is, the Confield I downloaded ended up being the one below. In fact the track off of Cristian Vogel's last album, which I'd almost sworn off, sounds pretty great (filtered through the Autechre universe, natch). As do the Monolake/Yokota tracks. Go figure. PS - All of the Hrvatski bits that ended up as Autechre tracks on Napster are just the 60-120 second samples of tracks at the reckankomplex discog page (http://www.reckankomplex.com/discog.html).
