I just realized something fascinating about "In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country". I don't believe I can recall any other 4 song EP that I own that feels like a complete piece of work. It has a distinct beginning, middle and end...almost giving off a feeling as if you've just listened to an entire LP. Not an easy task. Anyway....I thought that was kinda cool. I agree, although I don't really like Amo Bishop Roden :D I do think it's funny how so many IDM'ers are quite removed from the title playing a role in the song that they don't understand Zoetrope... like they've forgotten what a zoetrope is. It makes the song much better when you remember :D cheers, /derek p.s. I do think Autechre's "Envane" felt rather complete. of course it was also over 30 minutes hehe At 10:13 PM 3/14/2001 -0500, you wrote:

You need to buy more EPs. :) Unfortunately, those pesky flea-bitten UK 4-song multi-part CD-singles have tainted the good reputation of the EP. EPs, IMHO, tend to make better complete works than most albums... when they're done right. From the Butthole Surfers to Disco Inferno to Aemic to Minutemen to god knows how many electronic 12"s I own to god knows how many rock EPs I own. To make it more list specific.. um, "Donkey Rhubarb"? "Windowlicker"? ======================================================================= Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> "Run for the hills.... and hide your ho's" ======================================================================= On Wed, 14 Mar 2001, Rob Salit wrote:

A real definition is at http://www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term=zoetrope Essentially, they're a sort of toy with slits in the sides. You place a strip of paper that contains, essentially, a looping animation in it. You spin it relatively fast, and look through the slits to see the short looping cartoon (usually something relatively simple, given that these are rather small). They're horribly "simple," but their inevitable child-like quality makes it a key-in for Boards of Canada, who've made, essentially, a musical zoetrope. You can build one here: http://www.groeg.de/zoetrope.html or here: http://www.actf.com.au/learning_centre/interim_tol/online_res/anim2/anim2_zoetrope.html or here: http://www.freeweb.pdq.net/headstrong/zokit.htm which also contains an animation to show what they look like. cheers, /derek At 09:40 PM 3/14/2001 -0600, ±³§x„Þ wrote:

This I don't know. Has Boards of Canada ever been to California? heh Of course, the validity of articles is best represented, in my opinion, by a certain richard d. james :D It could've also been a rotating club, much like those restaurants. cheers, /derek At 12:57 AM 3/15/2001 -0500, Bill Wright wrote:

true? It's not a club in California its a film studio (amongst other things) founded by Francis Ford Coppola called American Zoetrope :) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
