he did a remix for nine inch nails on an ep last year titled "The Day the world went away" however i must warn you, its only on the vinyl. speaking of nin, i got the fragile on vinyl today. its taken me a year of consistant listening, but i really like it now. very subtle in notion. trent started studio sessions 6 weeks ago. it'll be interesting to see what he comes up with this time.

What did you last hear about? After the 'Biokinetics' album on Chain Reaction and the self titled album on Force Inc, there was another 12" called 'Trident' on Force Inc. English industrial dub nutters Techno Animal remixed a track of theirs for 'Techno Animal vs Reality' released on City Slang. (The release is credited as a Techno Animal release). This is according to the press release for the single, as found on www.fe.org. On the full length album I think Porter Ricks then remixed Techno Animal's remix of them. Somewhere in here there was a remix of American band Low, included on a remix album 'Owl' put out by Vernon Yard. Last year there was the collab album with Techno Animal (already mentioned) 'Symbiotics', on Force Inc. That was basically an extension of the above concept - both bands submitting raw sounds to the other, and having them make tracks out of each others materials. Most recently there's that Nine Inch Nails remix already mentioned. Thomas Koener has done at least one album since either of the purely Porter Ricks full lengths, as has Andy Mellwig as Async Sense. Without meaning to sound unfairly dismissive, I don't like anything I've heard from them since their Chain Reaction days, so I can't give any comments on any of the above except "I've stopped bothering to check their stuff out at all". Anybody here know anything about 2 step? I haven't heard much of it. What I've heard sounds jungly and d&b. Are there any conventions to the 2 step (like in house, you get claps on the 2nd and 4th beat)? Are there any particular dance steps? Is it a commercial hit in the UK? thanks mediadrome --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

This is my first post to IDM, so try not to abuse me too much. Some conventions of two step: 125-145 BPM breakbeat (differing from speed garage being more of a breaks influence than house influence), sharp snare hit on the 2nd and 4th beat, usually a cymbal or shaker every eight note. All the precussion hits are usually short, emphasizing the syncopation and giving it a more "swinging" feel. A lot of dnb style basslines, and, unfortunately, a lot of cheesy rnb influenced vocals. To be honest, I like some 2step. I'm a strong beleiver that 80% of any genre of music that is produced is crap, but unfortunately with 2step its closer to 90%. There is FAR too much pop/rnb influence with the stuff being released in the UK (where I beleive it's gotten to the point that 2step regularly shows up on the pop charts). However, that other 10% really does move my ass, and I like it. There is a good deal of 2step/garage stuff that is more embracing of its dnb roots, with rolling basslines, increasingly more complex perscussion, and lacking the cheesy diva vocals which turn so many people off. There is also an emerging sound crossing over between the newschool breaks and garage genres that brings the good parts of 2step/garage without most of the bad. For some bad 2step, listen to So Solid Crew, Oxide and Neutrino, and anything you can find on the BBC. For some good 2step (or garage, these classifications elude me sometime), list to Zed Bias, Dee Kline, DJ Zinc, DJ Hype, Stanton Warriors, and live sets (not so much production work) by Freq Nasty. -- Ross -- r.lord superclique,dc www.superclique.org rlord@superclique.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

good to see a couple of peeps namechecking stanton warriors on idm - their mix album 'the stantion session' released in 2001, is actually really fucking great. for various reasons i was given this record, and it sat on my floor for months. until someone mentioned them to me - and i was like.. 'yeah, but this is cheesy garage - right?' .. i expected just 'cool' music, because it wasn't marketed so much as a commercial record but an underground one with credibility for real people and not just 'underground garage' (or whatever) heads.. anyway - i put this record on and it is really great. yeah, a bit of cheesy diva action but take it tongue and cheek and actually this is booooty-lucious-a-shakin. certainly refreshing.. the sleeve notes make a comment which i think is true, it's talking about the history of stanton warriors and says that people were 'unable to bracket [determine] the warriors as the brightest hope or two-step heroes gone leftfield' nice. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I am from the UK and two-step has been done to death here. I must admit I'm not it's greatest fan, cause the artists have ripped off every piece of Dance history we know, sampling and screwing it up. Most real dance fans (IMHO) in the UK will steer clear of it, mainly because it went far too commercial. Stick to D'n'B, it's much better. As for conventions, I think that the rhythms are mainly concentrated into every two steps (rather than four as in House and most other forms), so breaks and stops are quite common (and irritating). Maybe you may hear something different, but I think it was a bad idea made worse.... All IMHO Also - Commercial Hit? It's the only reason 2-step got popular was by hype, media manipulation and suckers paying $$$ for recycled crap. 2-step is the only scene I know of to re-release a record with a few extra samples, and it was still popular..... Call it commercialism, call it whatever.... ----- Original Message ----- From: <Mediadrome@aol.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Saturday, January 05, 2002 2:04 PM Subject: [idm] 2 step

ok i'll admit it. i was a speed garage dj. back in madison, wisconsin, i'd been playing techno, house, d'n'b, and was bored with it all, till i found a 12" of that loop da loop mix of 'love commandments'. hard, driving 4/4 beat! huge d'n'b-style bassline! weird-ass time stretchy samples and things! i could have done without the cheese vocals, but i loved it all the same, and was hooked. i special ordered as much speed garage as i could...after a few months i noticed all the b-sides to the records i was buying were these 'breakbeat' mixes with cheeseball house organ lines and even more horrendous skippy vocal samples than the tracks on the a-side...this, apparently, was the infancy of '2step' (people around me were calling it uk garage at the time)...pretty soon the b-sides became the a-sides, and all i could find for speed garage records were horrid 4/4 mixes of ukgarage/2step tracks. gone were the huge dark basslines and fast driving beats, replaced with bubbly boring bass, and that skippy 'oontz-kak-buh-kakkak' beat. this was followed by all the uk pirates and even some mainstream radio stations starting to play it, terrible r&b songs getting bootlegged into even more terrible 2step tracks, the 2step blowup in the uk, and now the trickledown of it over here in the US. i relocated to san francisco about 4 years ago, and have watched a number of really good local d'n'b djs jump the jungle ship and start playing what i've come to call poostep...oh well. i sit here under my grumpy umbrella, waiting for this unfortunate storm to pass. like when one of my closest pals got deeply and inexplicably into happy hardcore. heh. admittedly, i've heard a few good 2step tracks: stuff on domu's new record 'up and down', an aromabar remix i forget the details of, some things on svek that sound like 2step and tech-house humping... but i suppose i'd like to hear from someone who actually likes 2step. tell me: why? what's the appeal to you? is there anybody out there? -z On Sat, 5 Jan 2002, Rich wrote:

I'll try not to add *too* much more to this unless asked, but I'll speak up (briefly) as an avowed lover of 2-step. Granted, I'm a music whore and in some senses I love songs/vocals as much as production -- but I'm definitely not a fan of much contemporary R&B and I've still found a lot to love in 2-step. Here's three of the best: Stanton Warriors - Stanton Session - the Basement Jaxx of the 2-step scene: infectious and irresistible, but very tight V/A - Pure Garage (mixed by DJ EZ) - very R&B/anthems sounding, not going to change yr mind, but if you like classic house music, you'll love this... Zed Bias - Sound of the Pirates - harder, more track-oriented... Just be sure to avoid single-artist albums: MJ Cole, Wookie, and esp. Artful Dodgy (except their mix albums). --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hello IDM list, I have been on and off this list for 5 years now. I am glad to be back on and I hope to stay a while. As Troy McClure would say, "Some of you may know me as Magic Hands." (When I first joined the list it was de rigueur to use a DJ-type pseudonymn.) Today, you can call me Matt. I have a special request. Recently I destroyed my copy of Porter Ricks' "Biokinetics" release. That darn metal case finally did me in. I have looked around for the album on various music/file sharing services, but the few mp3s I've been able to find have been of poor quality. I'd love to get the whole album, but if someone could send me a link to a CD quality mp3 of "Port Gentil" (the first track on the album), I'd be very grateful. Very, very grateful. Please reply off-list to the e-mail below.
