Echoing Brian's comments, what would anyone know about CD (re)issues of earlier Aphex material? When the rights go back to Mr. James, could a 'proper' retrospective appear, perhaps something which could appear Stateside on Sire Records? And thinking on that, when IS the Sire debut due to appear, and will it really be a 3-CD affair? NAR

Review from HMV weekly guide to new releases:- Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Volume II "Aphex Twin aka Richard James aka Polygon Window is one of the few electronic innovators who have risen above the crowd of faceless techno boffins to be regarded as a creative genius and cult hero. One of the most eagerly awaited albums around, "Selected Ambient Works Volume II" has 25 tracks and runs for two and a half hours. Out on limited triple vinyl, standard triple vinyl, double CD and cassette." Well, now you know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally I have the 2CD. Here is my humble opinion: Now this album IS ambient. Not in the literal sense of the word, but rather in the tradition of Eno, Byrne, Fripp, Sylvian, Gong etcetera. Aphex creates a sonic soundscape of interlocking sounds that drift somewhere between beautiful and heavenly. This is an album that is not so much listened-to as heard. However it is still immensely involving and it is not long before you find yourself somewhere between sleep and consciousness. Believe me...I wasted a whole afternoon in bliss, half alive on my bed. This album has all the qualities of classic ambience, such as Edgar Froese's "Aqua" and Steve Hillage's "Rainbow Dome Musik". However, at the expense of this Aphex has lost the trademark sound we are familiar with. Rumour has it that he first created this sound when his first home-made sampler failed to work. Watching him solder on stage, I can believe it. So. A warning for all you hardheads out there: ZERO BPM, requiring some form of attention span) This album is GREAT!! I lifted the following quotes from the march 17-30 DJ magazine aphex twin interview by andy crysell ON THE TOPIC OF REPHLEX RECORDS. . . "We've got loads of stuff waiting - basically we signed up all the good shit we could find without thinking about how were ever gonna manage to release it all. Our scheduling policy is based around which artists hassle us the most - they get their suff out first while the more chilled-out guys have to wait for a while." ON THE TOPIC OF COPING WITH THE URGE TO MAKE MUSIC 24 HOURS A DAY "I'm already planning my escape," he sniggers, before diving back into his (Kraftwerk) book for an extended stint, "I'm considering vanishing and making no music ever again. Perhaps that's the only satisfactory solution." enjoy it while you can, T double EP

pashdown@xmission.com,Internet typed: Everything produced after "On" has failed to ignite me. I concur totally. Xylem Tube and the Didgeridoo EPs are really special, amazing. What is this ABIV crap. And 50% of SAWII is just tedious (i wouldn't say annoying, nor 'puts me to sleep' just tedious). Ecto Doesn't matter much now, though, because there's Mu-ziq, Seefeel, and lots others out there...:)

I have to agree with Jeff. I just recently purchased SAWII and find the variety of material quite satisfying. Unfotunately, the only track that is identified on my CD is Blue Calx, which I was already famaliar with from the excellent Chill-Out Phase 2 compilation. So, if anybody has the time to list the tracks to SAWII it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Byron Towle byron@tellabs.com

All this talk about Aphex Twin going off the boil. Am I alone in never having rated him ? Since I saw a live set of his about 3 years ago (I guess) I was unimpressed enough to carefully avoid his stuff. What I have heard since has never made me re-consider this approach ;-). There's so much good stuff around I very occaisionally feel the need to take a harsh and unreasoned view such as this - there's only so much money and so much listening time.... It was nice to see he has a sense of humour though, giving away sand paper discs...who's the joke on though ? Certainly not whoever owned the turntables he was using (or whoever spun after him) :-) OnEarlier Woob - Void pt 2 (Beeswax 12") jbuzza@cix.compulink.co.uk (Jon Burrell)

No one knows when Aphex Twin will be seen outside his bank vault again. He operates on his own schedule, and the latest thing he's said publicly is that he can't be bothered to release records ever again, and I'd presume that he is even less enthusiastic about putting a live set together and touring. And if you're such a fan why can't you spell aphex? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
