I guess I'll chime in as I've never replied to this topic and it comes up on the list every couple months. I start out with "I listen to IDM, which is an American term but means Intelligent Dance Music." It's basically expiremental electronic music mostly computer generated but ranging from melodic and lush ambient to harsh and glitchy noise". I wait for their reaction or questions... and if they seem interested I continue with... "If you're interested I could definitely tune you on to some really great music that you've probably never heard". Then I bring them some various compilations I've made of IDM artists. I start off with the more pleasant and accessible stuff, gauge their response and then continue from there. When asked, I've always said I listen to electronic music and vary my particular tastes depending upon how much the music progresses. Right now Im very much into IDM (see above explanation for elaboration) but I got very much into Jungle when it progressed from the LTJ Bukem sounds in '96 to the current sound started by the RAM/Virus/Metro/etc. crews. It was great at the time but that particular sound hasn't progressed much since '98. The new Danny Breaks album is great though - as well as the new Roni Size ! It's always fun when people ask what kind of music I make. I usually tell them 'techno' and once I've got them expecting 4-on-the-floor cheesy hardhouse shit, then I play them some of my tracks. "But that's not techno!" "Isn't it?" G-love. http://www.gram.org.uk
