Hello, I have been meaning to write this review for a while now. I was lucky enough to have received the minidisc only comp called MD1. It is out on a new label called n5md (http://www.n5md.com). This is also a minidisc only label. What I like most about this release is that I can tell it is a labor of love. Somehow that always makes a release better. Anyhow on to the music Track 1. Spark - eopl Track 2. Arovane - levd/a:crtel These two tracks can be best described as the new pop. To me this is music that employs odd crunchy beats surrounded by atmospherics and/or odd noises/melodies. As a whole these tracks work great - this is the kind of thing I like to work or drive to. Easy to get lost in them. Track 3. Precenphix - redleaves This also uses atmospherics but Precenphix stands out because it easily maintains a darkness. The beats are faster and more desperate. Seems like there is a definite beginning and end to the track. I have heard his other work and it is of top quality. An artist to watch. Track 4. O2 - 0002 This is my favorite track. A slow muted beat, odd percussion, sweeping synth and what sounds like a piano. This is dripping with emotion. Though somewhat minimal the detail here is incredible. Everything in it's place.-- music for sunrises on battlefields. Track 5 - Lilenthal - sucrosesand Track 6 - rml - drg/n/drp Track 9. Eu - tsutu These three are similar in that they a take the basic approach of the first two tracks but morph it into something more complex (especially the rml track). There is a definite evolvement of ideas through out the tracks. Again detail is a primary focus. I like these tracks a lot because I do not get bored with them. I can listen to them over and over and find new avenues to explore. The Eu track seems to be more direct but also uses a bit of distortion to separate itself. Track 7. Rivel - de-gress A break from the more somber mood created by the other tracks. A little bit more lighthearted. Fun little melodies - a fast good listen. Track 8. Vcam -dirwhildagmer Again mood is important - atmospherics are setup but then space is filled with far away noises/percussion. Mostly an ambient track that seems to linger with sadness - - a track designed for mood. Track 10 - Neutral - Recoil I will not review this track because I am biased. Overall a very good comp. Definitely created to express a mood. None of the tracks seem to be out of place. The main theme here seems to be atmospherics and emotion. This is accomplished 10 fold. If you are looking for an emotional ride you should seek this out. -daniel: Fight Like Apes: Mad Monkey Records: http://www.madmonkey.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
