Hello. Ah, good to see some folks getting down to a good ol' fashioned Autechre pronounciation thread. We ain't seen one of them for a while! Of course, this is a completely anal issue, but it's always fun to see how other people have pronounced Autechre tracks over the years. So, without further a do, an because I've got some spare time before the England vs Italy football match kicks off, here is the full run down of Autechre track titles and how I've always pronounce them. Feel free to add your own personal pronounciations to this list, for pure train-spotting goodness. And despite all the disclaimers I'm liberally strewing all over this message, odds on someone will still go, "DUH! THAT'S SO ANAL!" Yes, I know it is, but what the fuck. Sue me. Let's just have some fun! Oh, I'm leaving out all the Gescom stuff, remixes, compilation appearances, limited edition shit and what have you, otherwise I'll be here all year. I'll just list the Autechre albums and eps on Warp. I'll list the titles/albums first and then add my pronounciation underneath in brackets. Some of the tracks are pretty obvious (especially Amber), but I'll list everything for completeness. -----------. Incunabula ) ===========' incunabula (in-kew-nab-ular) kalpol introl (kal-poll in-troll) bike (bike) aut riche (awt-reesh) bronchus 2 (bron-kus 2) basscadet (base cadet) egg shell (egg shell) doctrine (doc-trin) maetl (may-tal) windwind (wind-wynde) lowride (lowride) 444 (four-four-four) -----. heh, i couldn't resist, being that i have a strong interest in linguistics, and so many of these pronunciation things are just really funny :)
quoted 2 lines incunabula>incunabula >(in-kew-nab-ular)
where did this "r" come from?
quoted 4 lines windwind>windwind >(wind-wynde) >teartear >(teer-tare)
uhh what? i think the ambiguity of saying these two songs were very intended, hence the dual pronunciation. you can say it depending on how you feel at the time.
quoted 2 lines djarum>djarum >(da-zharum)
(dya-rum) (yeah like bjork = byerk)
quoted 2 lines tri repetae>tri repetae >(try repper-tay)
where did this "r" come from??
quoted 2 lines rettic ac>rettic ac >(rettick-ack)
due to the presense of all caps on this release, i've always pronounced it "A C", instead of "ack", but it could go either way.
quoted 2 lines tewei>tewei >(tee-wee)
i think chiastic slide is cursed to be the album that people can not spell the actual track titles correctly. it's tewe, which according to the structure of english, is pronounced like "two" or "to" or "too", maybe with a little more w sound
quoted 2 lines cichli>cichli >(kitch-lee)
this has already been hashed out to death with the presence of the "cichli suite" ep. it's "sickly", as in "sickly sweet"
quoted 2 lines recury>recury >(wreck-you-ree)
sorry again, but according to the structure of root word pronunciation and suffix addition, this is still just "recur" with an "ee" added. so it's (reh-curry) wee, what fun. and it's autechre so it's obviously on topic :) cheers /derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I tend to think of Autechre track titles as ineffable. That is: These Things Should Not Be Uttered. It makes more sense when you realize that the titles, when strung together, are actually cabalistic codes, which, when the whole of Autechre's eventual output is deciphered, will reveal the true name of God, at which point Socrates the illiterate will suddenly and eternally violate Plato with a skateboard, on a DVD skip, in a neverending return of the same (keeping in mind that the ancient Greeks viewed the reading of the written word--always out loud--as akin to sodomy, the words infused with the essence and voice of the one who first engraved them, entering on one end and leaving through the other). Much of the time, autechre track pronunciations are guesswork, but I'm pretty certain that cichli is pronounced "sickly". The clincher for this is that wap96 (cichlisuite) is then pronounced "sickly sweet". (which is a somewhat common phrase; i can't believe it's a coincidence!) jon __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I could be totally wrong here, but I believe "djarum" is an indian word (as opposed to Bjork which obviously is not). But I think it's pronounced (jar-uhm), like the popular brand of Clove Cigarettes. morgan -- (DJ Tyr) aka (Xpansion) ____________________________________________________ \ AIM: Tyr1024 \ TRiP \ \ ICQ: 17223283 \___________________________________\ \ Work Email: tyr_at_work@yahoo.com \ / http://www.mp3.com/djtyr / / http://www.mp3.com/_xpansion_ / /___________________________________________________/ "I love laundry." - ms. monica "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. But that's just me ;) alan! np:tied & tickled trio:ea1 ea2 rmx:morr music this is a pretty cool disc. what's even cooler than the music though is that i'd never heard of T&TT, but now i have something new to check out. other folks that were already in the know: how does their non-remixed stuff compare to this? my favorite track on the disc is the christoff kurzmann mix. i agree.. i think far to many idml people dismiss funkstorung as an autechre clone.. IMO they are vastly different.. i recently have found myself listening to Appetite far more than ep7 or lp5.. it just fits my mood better lately.. im sick of being cold and alone.. and that's what Ae does to me.. but funkstorung seems to have a bit more of a human feel to it.. with the vocals.. and the 'noticeable' human tweaking.. sometime Ae's stuff sounds like a computer was tweaking the computerized sounds.. :) aaron systorm technologies www.systorm.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

OK. My English is not so good. What I meant to say was that Funkstorung has grown up from the field where Autechre saw their seeds starting from Incunabula to Chiastic Slide. I believe LP5 and EP7 have nothing in common with what Funkstorung does now. There are few tracks on Appetite For Distruction that sound really similar to Under BOAC from Ae's LP5. Anyway, today's Funkstorung suck ass. Multiply Grammy Winners single was awfull, I just couldn't listen to it. Though i just _adore_ their early releases. Dmitry.
