from the swedish magazine "Groove" 7/2000: Burning Rome "Soundtrack for 'Chaos Theory in Practice'" (Circumvent) Circumvent is a new label from Austin, Texas. The label, according to the owners, deal in music, and nothing but music. Experimental electronic ditto, by the way. Is that why the records are released in nothing but a clever little round container, made out of semi-hard plastic? I've seen more attractive records. Anyway. Burning Rome is american Mark Kolmar. His record consists of one 45 minute piece, created for a video artwork by Sofia Bogdanovich. It works excellently on its own as a suggestive sound blanket. "Soundtrack for 'Chaos Theory in Practice'" is a loop-based piece where different rhythmic loops flow into another, backed by a low-frequent hum. New things constantly happen to keep the interest up. Especially the middle part, which almost entirely consists of very small pieces of sampled voices, impresses with its complex simplicity. It's hard to belive, but it gets a groove going. Mark Kolmar leaves you wanting more.
