Yes. I feel like a whore every day, as a matter of fact. But, I don't
treat co-workers and clients with utter contempt and turn around and
walk away as they talk in mid-sentence or hang up the phone on them. If
I did, I would no longer have my job. Which would be good because there
would be a bit less hypocrisy in my life; bad because I'd be homeless
and unemployed. So I live with it and spend all my free time towards
improving that particular aspect of living.

No reason to be a prick either. I never said I was expecting him to be
downright nice to anyone. I was just taken aback by the sheer,
deliberate rudeness, that's all.

I've lived in enough formal cultures in different countries/continents
to know the difference, I think. Anyways, I'm not going to argue my
opinion here, as your mileage may obviously vary. If the audience
members who tried to speak to him offended the guy with their crass
North American fandom, good! We shouldn't get mad at a Japanese visitor
who bows to show status any more than they should get mad at us over
here because we don't. Besides, there's nothing in German culture that I
am aware of that makes approaching someone to say something taboo;
unless every German I have ever come across in Germany and abroad was
somehow a freak case different from everyone else, but I find that
implausible.
