Who the hell are Metamatics?
One Lee Norris, a quietly spoken young dance rebel hiding out in deepest
darkest Devon, holed up with nothing but a bank of electronic gadgetry for
company.
Listen out for: Spook Tinsel Shoal, his new album on south London label
Hydrogen Jukebox which takes classic electronic sounds with a distinct
Detroitian influence and beefs them up with some solid British breaks and
beats.
The new: It's difficult to compare people in electronic music as they seem
to get a bit miffed but if Carl Craig and the Aphex Twin shared a bong with
Ryuichi Sakamoto round at Kraftwerk's pad and then had a tinkle on the old
ivories it may sound like this.
Why all the fuss? To be frank there isn't that much fuss. He's hardly gonna
sell a million records and ride round in a pink Rolls Royce snorting
cocaine but what Lee doesn't sell in records he ploughs back into his art.
Sweet, eh? If you are a dance music wannabe, though, Metamatics is a
leading light.
Can you believe? Lee's label is called Neo Ouija, his album is called Spook
Tinsel Shoal and he's made other tunes called Man-Q-Neons (Mancunians,
geddit?) and Midnight Sunpig. Who says dance music is unimaginative?
They say: 'I'm not part of the dance music industry, I'm more interested in
music rather than looking at my new trainers. They're a bunch of poseurs,
I'm more into making music and not having the fashion ... it ****s things up.'
'My music is pure electronics, no bloody drum and bass or bleeding hip hop.'
'Dance music is smart - you're making music and people want to go out and
buy it!'
We say: Metamatics makes what synthesisers were invented for - pure
electronic music that will have you palpitating all over your Technics for
decades to come.
