Leaf Newsletter #35 October 17th 2000 this newsletter contains details of the following: 1. 'Invisible Soundtracks Volume V' 12" 2. Manitoba - 'People Eating Fruit' EP 3. forthcoming Leaf events, including 310 live in Europe 4. mail order info 5. office chart! 1. NEW RELEASE Invisible Soundtracks Volume V EP formats: limited edition 1,500 x 12" only (REEL 5) release date: Monday 30th October 2000 mail order price: 4.00 GBP (+p&p) - available from us now!! barcode: UPC 0666017013268 Following hot on the heels of The Leaf Label's highly successful Invisible Soundtracks: Macro 3 CD comes this new EP (Volume V in the 12" series) containing four brand new tracks. This time out, Leaf have got some people you should really have heard of to contribute: Chris Brann (as P'Tang), Faultline, Sofa Surfers and relative newcomer Gorodisch. Limited to just 1,500 copies, all tracks are exclusive and specially commissioned for the project: stimulating, evocative pieces across a variety of styles. P'Tang, aka Chris Brann, aka Wamdue Project, aka P'Taah, has long been established as a master of deep house and techno. Then, out of the blue, Wamdue's 'King Of My Castle' became one of the biggest selling singles of 1999. His album as P'Taah on Ubiquity is a brilliant fusion of jazz, house and electronica. Here he moves further into graceful Latin territory with the wonderfully titled 'Mars Is A Giant Flat For Rent'. Stephen Cracknell has been steeped in music all his life, and has been a record dealer, run a record label and been a musician (working alongside the enigmatic Grantby). No stranger to soundtracks, he was involved in getting the legendary 'Wicker Man' soundtrack released. This year he bagged a slot as Badly Drawn Boy's bass player and has spent most of the summer touring the world. His only other release as Gorodisch to date was on Leaf's Osmosis compilation, though there are plans for an EP next year. 'Cariad' is an updated version of classic English folk, weaving hurdy gurdy, cello and harp through the indolent beats. 'Home' is Faultline's first release since the massively acclaimed Closer Colder album (September 1999), which has gone on to be Leaf's biggest seller. David Kosten has since signed to Blanco y Negro, and will release his second album in the new year. His music has been used to soundtrack TV ads, notably a Sony TV ad used across Europe this year. Sofa Surfers' most recent album, Cargo, was a stunning evocation of urban paranoia utilising their unique hard-edged dub style. "Talking about movies for us is another instrument for a better communication within a music production," says the Surfers' Wolfgang Schlögl. "Terms like "the cruising in Bad Lieutenant" describe a certain sound and atmosphere. Everybody knows what is meant." Another Invisible Soundtracks 12" (Volume VI) will be released early next year. Cert A 1. P'Tang - 'Mars Is A Giant Flat For Rent' 2. Gorodisch - 'Cariad' Cert AA 1. Sofa Surfers - 'Strange Encounters (I - III)' 2. Faultline - 'Home' 2. NEW RELEASE MANITOBA - 'People Eating Fruit' EP formats: limited edition 1,000 x 12" only (DOCK 24) release date: Monday 30th October 2000 mail order price: 4.00 GBP (+p&p) - available from us now!! barcode: UPC 0666017015965 Manitoba, eh? You'll be familiar with 'Anna and Nina', the sprawling, don't-call-it-nu-jazz opener on the very successful Invisible Soundtracks: Macro 3. Manitoba is Dan Snaith, a twenty-two year old Toronto-based producer, and this is his debut EP. The thing is, Dan is troubled by the idea that people will think he's a chin-stroky-esoteric-music-bore. We know that nothing could be further from the truth, and so will you with even a casual spin of the glorious tune that is 'People Eating Fruit'. We do, however, acknowledge that it's: True - he's been trained in classical and jazz piano since, forever. and True - he'll embark on a PhD in pure maths when he finishes his degree at Toronto University, next year. But then, he started buying records. This has been known to encourage wayward youthful misdirection in the best of us. His songs have titles like paintings, or photographs, and in the fine, spidery melodies and unusual evocations of distilled time you may think of moments when your friends made you laugh, when the light struck the furniture at a strange aspect, or someone looked up at you in the street and in that brief second, new possibilities leapt into your mind. It's this random human element - discovering something extraordinary in the everyday - as well as Dan's live playing of guitars and keyboards, mixed with computers and sampling, that makes Manitoba a thing of grace, warmth and simple beauty. This EP's limited to 1,000 copies, and his album will be out next year. The working title is Dude, I'm Screwed. Already creating quite a stir in London town, with radio plays from the likes of Ross Allen, leftfield Single Of The Month in iDJ and Wax (already!) and features forthcoming in Jockey Slut, 7 and Straight No Chaser. We think he's going to be a quiet star. A1. People Eating Fruit A2. James' Second Haircut B1. Victor And Carolyn B2. 218 Beverley 3.
