this antiorp/m9ndfukc/f1f0 person/organization/entity is amazing. i bought one of their software products and it is the most obnoxious app i have ever had the pleasure of running. talk about using the User Interface against the user ... sheer genius and quite a statement of just how much one's own computer can be used against one. also visiting any of their web-sites (they seem to change often) is always a rare treat ... i have never seen a java applet used to completely render a machine useless in quite such a beautiful way.

!!!!FUCK-ALL HUGE WARNING DISCLAIMER!!!!! the following link will completely fuck your computer, so don't even think of clicking on it until you have saved everything, installed a real operating system (read: not Windows or MacOS) and maybe even called your mommy first... that said, it's an awesome ride. click it. but i warned you. http://www.membank.org/0000/0000.html anyway this f1f0 chap (or antiorp or Netochka Nezvanova or any other alias he-she-it-them go by online) has turned rogue software into a Fine Art. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) of a piece of software is *supposed* to create a transparent user experience by providing a set of easily understood metaphors that are implemented consistently and universally. The user knows that moving the scrollbar will cause a window to scroll, and clicking a button will cause some other function to execute. f1f0's software takes the opposite approach. Important functions are obsucred beyond recognition. Buttons that do nothing are given prime GUI real-estate. Control of the mouse is wrestled from the user and used to draw fancy geometric patterns on the screen. I purchased a sound generation/manipulation program called b!257+!2 from f1f0/antiorp. There is a region of the UI that pops up an "about box," standard operating procedure for a lot of software. What's different about this program is that the entire time you are reading the credits for the software, the program is busy creating empty Font Suitcases with titles taken from random snippets of C++ code and dumping them in the application directory. The user quits the program to find that well over 500 new documents have been created and started hogging up the Finder's resources... The amount of trust one places in the creator of a piece of software immediately becomes apparent when you consider how easily f1f0/antiorp could have ruthlessly fucked your system rather than just dumping a few files into one directory... anyway, he/she/they also create a program called "NATO" which is the end-all for real-time Quicktime manipulation/editing/ruthless-fuckery ... it costs around $800 so i haven't picked it up quite yet but i have seen it in action, it's pretty toot sweet. so troll the newsgroups for this mo-fo and click those links ... but beware :) josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Mon, 18 Sep 2000, Ryan Pulley wrote:

Probably safest viewed in a text-only browser like Lynx on a UNIX box, methinks. :-) Netochka Nezvanova (not the name she was born with, let me add :-) is a New Zealander, now living in Amsterdam, I believe. She organised a really interesting gig here in Wellington, NZ, while she was studying music at our local uni, maybe 4 years ago now. She got a bunch of people from dance backgrounds and a bunch of people from electro-acoustic backgrounds, and had them playing alternately in a concert with a big multi-speaker diffusion set up. It was a lot of fun, because it forced some completely disparate crowds to sit through each others favoured music and deal with it. I remember being distinctly uncomfortable throughout the whole deal, particularly when playing, as so few people had any time for the "other". There did seem like a lot more variety among the dance stuff than the academic stuff, all said... I remember everything starting out with a local producer 50Hz playing this 180bpm jungle track that was going ballistic all over the room through the 15 or so independent speakers... Heh. :-) Not sure if this is particularly IDM-related, but I thought those who have had to put up with her on-line antics on other lists might like to hear something categorically true about the person, rather than just cyber-style gibbering in whichever European languages look most intellectual. :-P Michael np. This person is a psycho. Of course i miss having her around on mailing lists. As an inveterate sound tweaker, I'm very interested in anything new and twisted for sound manipulation. Unfortunate the data-terrorist netochka nezvanova seems to want to make it as hard as possible to figure out what the %3)P(*#&& is going on with this stuff. If you go to her web site it does odd things to your screen, and I hope nothing malicious to your computer. She seems to have some sort of message to deliver about consumerism and government, but beats me what it is. I've always thought there was a value to communicating clearly. Anything you can say in an obscure manner can be said in a clear manner, and people might actually understand you in the bargain. kent williams -- kent@avalon.net http://www.mp3.com/chaircrusher -- tunes http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?autostart=chaircrusher -- mix On Mon, 25 Sep 2000, Christophe McKeon wrote:

Just to clarify, this is the woman who signs as Netochka Nezvanova, and who normally has an email address something to do with "integer". I'm posting because I've found her attempts at mystique rather pointless. Apologies if this comes off as malice, that's not what motivates me. Michael np. to be completely nit-picky... what's the point of her writing the software at all? or the point of any of the artists discussed on the list doing what they do? there are many artists who create a wall of obscurity between themselves and their audiences for a number of reasons, none of which are particularly functional. i think her use of obfuscation, numero-linguistics and euro-robotic monotony create a sort of "Corporate Image" that spans all her output, including the newsgroup posts, her web-sites, and her software. it's a trademark, and a very well exectued one at that. furthermore, it serves to remove human identity from the posts, creating a sort of hacker romanticization that perhaps the programs are written by some sort of glitchy Eastern European AI. anyway, you probably get the idea that i'm coming down in favor of the "mystique" later... josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
