I was ultimately dissappointed that the size of the audience for the
Emanate nights in SF was hardly bigger than the shows up in Portland
(40-80 people) (which is less than a fifth the size of SF, btw). (my first
impressions of Jim G and Lex is that Lex is slightly aloof and
self-absorbed, but younger, fwiw) For instance, I had OST play up here
and he had a bigger crowd than at the Emanate night in downtown SF, which
I think is purely a product of what Jim is complaining about below.
After Deno moved down to SF and started Emanate, he called me to complain
about not having anywhere to play, so I urged him to set up his own shows,
though I thought SF must be pretty lame to not have something else up.
Even Sacremento has a closer knit community+scene of
avant/noise/experimental people - they used to have those NorCal Noise
Festivals and people were coming up from SF, ironically. Merzbow once
played in Sac and skipped SF! wtf?? So, you gotta DIY, Jim!
You got Emanate, Sprout, Hydrant, Plug, DropBeat artists, go get all the
contact info the Static folks collected, surely they'll share it...

oooo nice one...... <hi 5>
The old stuff I've heard is just noise-feedback and 91-style breakbeat
sped up. boring to me, not very interesting. I know both of those genres
pretty well (forgotten a lot actually), so maybe I'm jaded. I've read on
the archives that he is programming a bit more personal stuff, that is
promising... His Warhol-style self-promotion is grating, but ridiculously
effective on the media, obviously. More power to him; reminds me not to
read the music press though. idiots they must be to still fall for that.

I read in an interview that he has a friend sit and watch cult movies and
tv all day recording cool quotes and sounds into minidisc for him.
This has a certain irony as I think Cevin Key used to be an invisible
member of the Legendary Pink Dots, making collage tapes for them in their
beginning, though Key went on to big fame and the Pink Dots labored on in
obscurity.

I wouldn't want to start an arguement, but I would argue you are wrong if
you are arguing that-I'm-arguing-about-arguing! ;)

I listenned to most of the realaudio for this lp on some web page and I
decided that this record is trying to sound like electro-breaks with video
game sounds, but avoiding any references to new wave or kraftwerk but
instead parking the rhythm section squarely in the downtempo-breaks zone.
I don't know what the intention was, but I think it was tracks 1,2, and10
or 8 that I liked. I appreciate that they have a whole video collage
built synced to the music, perhaps this excuses the musics shortcomings
for me. Having heard the realaudio, I think I would buy the album only if
I got the video that seems equally the focus...

Oh, yeah, Forel, your little box... is that an old Crumar bass-boost
pedal? If it is battery powered, well check the batteries. Since it
loses signal after being on for a few seconds, that sounds like a
capacitor is going. If you have a voltmeter that measures capacitance, or
borrow one, you can desolder one of the caps legs and test it. Get a
basic electronics book from your library to learn how to identify and
determine the written values of caps, resistors, etc, it isn't too
technical. If there aren't many caps, you could try replacing them all,
try www.mouser.com. most caps look like little cylindrical cans with the
wires coming out of one end. the direction the wires are to go is
indicated by a '+' sign, and you should note their placement and draw
'+''s on the circuit board before desoldering them. If this pedal is what
I'm thinking of, it should only have 1-5 capacitors in it, super cheap to
replace 'em all, like $3-4 tops, just borrow a soldering iron.

but you better not be 'too sexy for a soldering iron', cuz I think
you have a pretty obscure peice of kit to fix... ;)

Check out the '74 or '73 Schulze record with "My Velvet Phaser" (the whole
side of the record) if you like the early brutal aphex twin buzz noises...

Did you notice that they wrote that tune in like '78 or something? It is
credited somewhere near the lyrics. I guess by 79'80 they were corrupted
by their interest in sounding like disco'ey roxy Music or something, cuz
this tune far transcends the other stuff, imho.

Given he is my roommate, I've taken it on to prod him about this, however,
I think he is waiting for further submissions. This means YOU PEOPLE,
please. Several folks didn't follow through and he is left short of a
full cd, afaik. Perhaps someone can take one of their crackpot
pop-song-destroying ideas and further grind it into something of their
own... I choose to use two different Bruce Springsteen songs' rhythm
sections, followed the keys and buried the Grateful Dead's 'casey jones'
lyrics in a filtered refrain.

I have loved every set I heard her mix so far. beautiful super happy
goofy stuff, though in portland, one happy disney set she played seemed to
provoke the entire remainder of the bar (3 drunk aussies and the cook and
bartender) to such hatred of their childhoods as to pick fights with us as
she's packing up. they were literally yelling "take yer fuckin records
and git the fuck outta here!" shakin their fists and such.

Are they still in NY? My friend Ed Chang used to collab with those two
in NY a long time ago. It is good to hear girls are shoppin in the girls
department - i hate when they buy up all the cool men's clothes, there is
plenty of girls' clothes, probably 3 times as much out there. I don't
wanna have to start shoppin in the womens section when nothing is left!
