'Hmm'
20 cutting edge artists
tackling 20 hymns & anthems!
International artists from clubland, popular and sonic art fields chose
traditional hymns and anthems from around the world to record a unique
album of
adventures in beats, textures and melody. Revisiting early musical
influences, the artists re-invented the pieces, straddling the worlds of
ambient, dub, techno, funk and electronica; its familiar themes are chilled
out, experimental but accessible, and on only one digestible cd!
Sprawl is known for its popular innovative live and recording projects,
releasing such diverse artists as OSYMYSO, SCANNER, FREEFORM, and
commissioning new works from STEREOLAB, MU-ZIQ, SI BEGG and many more, on
albums such as CHINESE WHISPERS & THE BROKEN VOICE.
This new album, HMM, is not only a showcase for the many talents of
exciting new and well known artists, but also a provocative, evocative and
landmark
creative project with a unique angle. HMM is bound to create much media
interest. Previously Sprawl's Chinese Whispers remix project achieved major
articles in the Guardian, Independent as well as radio and TV coverage, due
to its similarly unique idea and blend of artists. Sprawl's most recent
release by Osymyso propelled him into the limelight and Osymyso (also
featured on HMM) is now a regular on BBC Radio One FM on at least 5 shows,
as well as having recent spreads in SELECT and WAX...
To tie in with the release of Hmm, Sprawl will be hosting GroundSwell, a
THREE DAY micro festival dedicated to the upsurging digital underground, to
be held at the ICA, London. This features many of the Hmm artists and is
already generating much media interest (for example, it was previewed in
the WIRE magazine), with upcoming radio, TV and newspaper coverage, this
will focus even further on the Hmm project... for info
