I was just listening to the tune Nightlife off of Tobin's Permutation and thought how cool it would be to hear movie soundtracks that mixed orchestration, jazz, and programming the way Amon does. I'd love to hear him do an entire soundtrack. Or... has someone already done this? I know that I occasionally hear cool bleeps, bloops, and beats behind commercials... but has anyone really incorporated anything like this as a movie soundtrack? -matT --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

matT- i'm sure soundtracks, or life tracks have crossed amon's mind... specially if you check his microsite... my preferred choice would be "slowly"/"sex" or "4 ton mantis" anyone with film contacts feel free to get in touch. btw: the cinematic orchestra recently did this in may in portugal - they were given a soundtrack to rewrite and performed it live at a film festival...well, but it wasnt the way Amon does it, that's for sure... speaking of soundtracks, (ok, maybe off list topic) but what would you consider an idm soundtrack? taxi driver, betty blue, angel heart, dune, bladerunner?

I'm not sure I really know. I mean,... I've heard IDM/electronica type stuff used in movies but I don't think I've ever really heard an entire movie score "intelligently" influenced, so to speak; at least allowing the influence of the last ten years or so of electronica evolution. I know that programming is certainly used. But that's a far cry from the prospect of the next blockbuster movie soundtrack written (orchestrated/programmed) and recorded by the likes of someone like Amon Tobin. Maybe Hollywood's too scared of it to throw this stuff out for mass consumption. Maybe the right people still just don't know about it. In my opinion, though, I think it would work very well, indeed! -matT --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

My point was to entertain the prospect of someone like Amon Tobin being commissioned to score a movie. That's a little different from compiling various idm artists to use within a movie. -matT --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Actually, though the Pi soundtrack did have various artists on it, Clint Mansell was commissioned to score it. The soundtrack has his original score along with the tracks from the other artists. It is nice haunting stuff he wrote for it. -- forel Toast toast toast toast --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I saw that movie. Indeed, the soundtrack is great, and the songs where in the movie. I remember Autechre's "Kalpol Introl", Orbital's "P.E.T.R.O.L." and Aphex's "Bucephalus Bouncing Ball". The songs fitted very well into the movie, as it was in a saturated black and white, very strange. Great movie. Check out http://www.pithemovie.com/ Wendy: About the Cinematic Orchestra's "live film soundtrack" here in Portugal (city of Oporto) i haven't seen it but my friends who did and newspapers said it was really great. The movie was "The man with the movie camera" made by the russian Dziga Vertov in 1929. I think this is an experiment that shoud be done more often. Taken from the "Pi" site: "In the twenty-five years since Walter (now Wendy) Carlos Williams created the first all-electronic score for A Clockwork Orange..." Was this the first IDM soundtrack? ;) ~lmarta. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

<You lucky bastard, Jeff ;) > For a very early example of quality electronic music, check out Louis and Bebe Baron's soundtrack to _Forbidden Planet_. It came out in something like 1956, but it still sounds contemporary. I believe it's been recently reissued on vinyl. I scored mine from Ultima Thule mail order in Leicester, England. This isn't exactly a Hollwood blockbuster, but I know that John Hughes III (Slicker) recently scored an Italian flick named Scarlet Diva. Whether he restricted himself to an electronic palette, I have no idea. There are mp3s at www.scarletdiva.com/c_sonora.htm, but I'm for some reason unable to access them. The score is (theoretically) coming out on Hefty some time this year. Cheers, Matthew "If there's one thing I can't stand, it's up." "Matthew Guest" <mguest@alphagraphics.com> wrote:
