so, ..pasted from this week's 'Muzik Weekly' newsletter. interesting, no? in a possibly related move, Ninja Tune mp3s were completely pulled from emusic.com as of yesterday, I note, taking away a significant reason to subscribe to their unlimited-download service there. grr. any comments on that, Ninjas on the list? A big shame.. regards, h0l. -- UK INDEPENDENTS UNITE TO TAKE ON THE INTERNET In an unprecedented move, over 400 British independent labels, including Beggars Banquet, Warp, XL and Ninja Tune, have joined forces to license their music on the internet. The ?Association Of Independent Music? (?AIM?) has been formed in a bid to give the independent sector a level playing field to compete with the major labels, and goes on trial this month. Artists such as Coldcut, The Prodigy and Underworld will now be usable legitimately on the net for soundclips, webstreaming and internet radio without having to approach each individual label. The logistics of this previously meant that either the music wasn?t used, or was used without consent. Alison Wenham, Chief Executive of AIM, explained with an excellent mixed metaphor that "we (the independent sector) have to make it easier to play our music. AIM sees the process as a one-stop-shop on a two way street." Even more importantly, it means that independent labels will be able to promote their material to potentially interested internet companies. The organisation hopes that they will be able to develop a fully working licensing system very soon, which will mean that the labels will be able to collect all royalties owed to them. As Ninja Tune?s chief internet boffin Peter Quike concludes, "AIM can negotiate better rates on our behalf because they represent a market share to rival the majors." Yeah, I joined up (for whole year :() because Emusic had so many major labels (that's major minor labels, so to speak) represented. If a substantial proportion are going to pull out that's a really big shame, and a very expensive mistake on my part. I'm sure if a large portion of their content is removed you could insist that they let you back out. It's totally illegal for them to sell you access to something then take part of it away from you. By the way, Emusic has been signing artists themselves, acting as a kind of music label themselves. Anyone know if they're signing anyone good, or if there is any stylistic bent at all to their A&R efforts? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
